Most of us have AVs so here's a simple test if your AV's worth it or not. Make a new document from notepad or whatever, the filename doesn't matter. And put this line in it and save it.

X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*

Now either leave it for your autoscan or scan it right away. Oh and this is not a virus...don't be too paranoid.

I use CCleaner, HijackThis, and Spybot S&D. Ive tried using AV software, but they all suck. I used Spybot on that string and it showed up almost instantly. The other 2 programs help in case Spybot missed something or if a command I dont want is running. Usually only people who don't really know how to surf or download get viruses, trojans, and or all that other crap (like clicking the "YOUR THE 13443534760TH PERSON TO CLICK THIS PAGE YOU WIN A COOL PRIZE!")|

I use Firefox, those 3 programs stated above, no firewall on a dsl line connected practically 24/7, and Aston shell (it replaces explorer.exe) and I get NO problems with any of that stuff. The last "virus" I had was sasser and that was like 2 years ago.
