I actually saved HUNDREDS of dollars by doing it this way. Honestly, i think it looks cooler, and i really enjoy all the fabrication, and having one-off piping. Its a one of a kind, kinda thing. And that was the attraction for me. Anyone can buy bends and piece something together. But honestly, if i have access to stuff like this, why not make something really cool! :2f2f:

very very nice, i like the welds on the piping, it does make it look meaner, so are you going to powdercoat them or anything? or jsut polish them?

Looks gangster man. Welds look great too. Wish my garage had a pipe cutter and welder like yours. I'd be doing shit like this all day if i could
BlackZenkiS14
03-17-2007, 10:33 AM
I wish I could take the credit for all the welding, but i didnt do it all. I did some of the cutting, most of the fitting, and some other small pieces we needed. But my good friend Pat did all the welding for me.
I think we have roughly 30+ hours in this whole installation.
I havent been able to feel much of difference yet. But i have only gotten on it once or so. Then i blew a coupler off, :( , im nervous to get on it again haha.
But before we finished the cold pipe, it felt a bit better. Its kinda hard to tell though, because its been pretty cold out, my smic was actually doing a decent job keeping cool, so now this is only a bit cooler. Im sure i'll notice a huge difference in the summer!
Im not going to powdercoat it or anything, their just gonna get polished some more.

Do worry about blowing couplers off. you will just not build any boost. My car use to do it all the damn time with my old intercooler setup. FYI spray some hairspray inside the coupler and on the pipe where it will go on, helps it stick on better :)
forum04pl
03-17-2007, 01:07 PM
great work, and +1 on not worrying about blowing couplers. you only have a few on your setup so it should be a quick fix if your ever stranded from blowing one.
im glad to see some nice tig'ing and some homade pipes. keep it up

Looks awesome! I would love to do the same thing but use v-band clamps in stead of couplings. Just curious did you use steel or aluminum
forum04pl
03-17-2007, 01:25 PM
looks aluminum
a vband setup would be sick but isnt really needed or practical money wise unless the car is fully race ready.. even then it might be overkill

03-17-2007, 02:00 PM
why dont you try to put a lip on the end of those pipes. it should help the pipes from popping off.
sepulchral
03-17-2007, 02:21 PM
i woulda said the hell with it and welded the lower pipes to the intercooler... less posibility for leaks and you still would be able to take it off
i like the work, i would suggest doing what speed_racerx said tho

03-17-2007, 03:24 PM
Pie cuts are great, if you use quite a bit more of them with less angle.
Other than that, looks good.
I just run a bead along the edge of the tube to act as a bead for the coupler to seat on... Bead rollers are great, but around $400 for a decent one.

I think it looks great, I always liked the look it gives by welding it up like that.
My only question is.... What took ya so long if you had access to all that ?!?!

03-17-2007, 09:47 PM
My bad if I made it sound bad. What I mean't was, the weld beads were a little inconsistent. Meaning the diametre of the beads weren't consistent. The welds itself look very clean and proper, with proper penetration. Awesome job regardless though.
