And its 1 liter... Oh Snap!
Clever packaging makes the most of the space. Just one engine will be offered in the U.S. — a 1.0-liter, three-cylinder developing 71 horsepower and 68 pound-feet of torque — and it's mounted under the trunk floor, just in front of the rear axle. The steeply raked rear hatch provides a surprisingly spacious load bay. There are 7.8 cubic feet of cargo space, which gives it an edge over the Mini. Occupant space is also generous. The passenger seat is positioned slightly behind the driver seat to optimize shoulder room, and this 6-foot-4-inch scribe had no trouble getting comfortable.
In America, the Fortwo will be distributed by the United Auto Group, a U.S. dealer group owned by racing legend Roger Penske. It will start with the Pulse at around $11K, which will have steel rims and no air-conditioning. The more upmarket Passion will cost around $13K and add air, alloys and a transparent polycarbonate roof. Topping the range will be the $15K convertible, which boasts an electrically folding soft top that can be opened or closed at any speed.

I'd drive it.
I'd drive a girl around in it.
I'd pull up to restaurants in it.
Wtf who CARES what you drive up to a restaurant in?? Are you that vain that you think people actually care what you look like?
It's a nice car for someone who lives in the big city, you can get around easily, go places others in their SUV's can't, park anywhere.
How long until we see a Sr20det in one of those ? Any bets?

yea true since every other person on the streets drives a SUV or truck, you're pretty screwed. Maybe not if you get hit in the front, but the rear and sides probably have less protection, not to mention a suv's front end might slam into the side window going over the cage, or worse yet run over the roofless car.
Then again gas is crazy expensive, so it will probably sell, maybe reducing the number of SUVs out there.

the normal looking one in the hatchback looks really cool. i remember seeing one on topgear about a year or so ago. if the MPG is decent, and the fun-factor is there. i dont see why i wouldnt have to investigate purchasing one. the only downfall i see is practicality. im interested in getting a legacy GT wagon just because it can do it all. this on the other hand, is not quite the same.
i would prefer to say that Smart is to Mercedes, as Scion is to Toyota. i just dont like to think of it as having anything to do with chrysler. haha.

And hell yes I'm vain when it comes to showing some class in a classy establishment. I'm not pulling up to Boa, Cut, Koi etc. in some car that can be found in the bottom of a cereal box. That may work in Ontario where the Black Angus is considered the top of the line dining establishment but in Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Los Angeles, it wont fly :)

i'd swerve one. not quite cheap enough though- you can buy a brand new cobalt for that much (yes cobalts suck, but you'd be driving a normal looking car with four seats). a few grand less and it'd make more sense to buy the two seater dinkmobile... and if i bought one, it'd definitely be a hardtop. people would be flinging drinks at you all day if you had a convertible smart car, and were a dude.

I live in maine and I ride in the snow, rain, slush, whatever. As long as it's not freezing rain or ice a motorcycle does quite well. That car looks to have a wheelbase nearing some motorcycles and it's rwd, so imo it's barely a step up in terms of stability or control in poor road conditions.
nothing a car can do compares to what you can do with a bike...look at this video - drifting (also called "backing it in"), endos (stoppies), wheelies, etc

7. Sex on the go :2f2f:
1. You don't need a helmet on a motorcycle..but I wear mine 99% of the time. It takes two seconds to put on...hmmm about the same time as a seat belt...so not really that much of a PITA.
2. There is such thing as a jacket...it really helps with avoiding snow and rain.
3. Don't need A/C, windchill effect is more than enough with proper gear. There are bikes with radios. Who cares about a leather interior when you're driving fast???? Why are you watching TV while driving?
4. Depends what car. Mclaren F1 can carry one more person than a motorcycle while an mr2 can carry the same amount. Most track cars carry one less than a motorcycle.
5. If you're worried about safety, you shouldn't be on zilvia...you should be on the camry forums :fawkd:
6. You can lane-split (some places it's actually legal) so there is no need to ram another vehicle and mess up your own...you'll already be home drinking beer :D
7. Refer to that old ass Aerosmith video...sex on a bike is possible
8. Whether you drive a harley or a crotch rocket I'm willing to bet nearly any women finds it far more appealing than nearly any car dollar-for-dollar...so even if sex on a bike isn't possible...you will get sex at your house/apartment more often. Plus a lot of girls don't even have any idea about most cars other than they think BMWs, audis, and mercedes are nice and it shows you have money. Seriously to a lot of girls a 240sx and a sentra are nearly the same car...while most girls know a bike has two wheels and shows you obviously have some skill if your still alive after riding a few years. I've seen my buddy who doesn't have any game get laid a lot...all he does is let a girl ride on the back of his bike...5 minutes and she's amazed so the rest of the night is cake for him. Getting laid isn't everything, but it's definitely a side benefit. Plus all the massive motorcycle rallys like sturgis and laconia (which is less than an hour away).
I'm not telling everyone to go out and buy a bike. There's a lot of people on this forum that couldn't handle one. The only thing I'm saying is for the price, this thing sucks. I wouldn't drive this thing if it was free...sorry I'm not like one of the previous guys saying that you can pull up to a fancy resturant/club with an s13...but I like the styling far more and that's what's important.
I love 4 wheels, but if you actually try a motorcycle you will understand my perspective.
TheSquidd

I love 4 wheels, but if you actually try a motorcycle you will understand my perspective.
The absentminded perspective that somehow, you just tried to justify that a motorcycle is
A. as safe as a car
B. as convenient as a car
C. has more "sex" appeal than a car.
Sure, motorcycles are cool. They get good gas mileage, they can cut lanes, and they're fast. I know tons of motorcycle drivers, my father is one, tons of my co workers are riders. None of them would argue that a motorcycle is safer or AS safe as a car. None of them think they are convenient at all, and none of them has gotten ANY ass from being a motorcycle rider.
1. A helmet sucks to wear, I know, I've worn many at events. They suck, they suck at comfort, they suck at vision, they suck. They're to protect your head and that's it. A seat belt doesn't suck in any way IMHO. I wear a 5 point, and that is a PITA dailying, but a standard 3 point OEM belt is comfortable, and does nothing to hinder a driver in his normal duties.
2. Yes, wear a jacket in the snow and rain, that'll keep you 100% dry like a vehicle will. :loco:
3. I believe his point was that the amenities in modern cars today make for a much more enjoyable experience for both the driver and passenger vs. riding on a bike.
4. Yeah way to use a McLaren F1 and an MR2 as your basis of argument, they are SUCH common cars that EVERYONE drives.
5. I'm very much concerned for safety, and I feel I'm a pretty standard member of Zilvia. I have a bucket seat which I made sure was FIA tested and approved, I have a FIA standard 5 point camlock harness and an SCCA approved 4 point roll bar. Because I own these to protect myself in high performance driving situations, I should not be a member of Zilvia? Do people in Camry's only do this?? I don't get it.
7. Totally the last place I'd ever want to have sex is on a bike or in a car.
8. Who the fuck cares. If you ride a bike, or drive a car because you expect to get ass with it, then you have much greater problems than how many wheels your sitting on. You definitely sound like someone who has the entire female race REALLY figured out, I mean spot on. The women that sleep with you because you simply ride a motorcycle must be classy folk.
Despite all this, yeah I'd love a bike. I think they're cool city. But I would never get rid of my car, a bike simply just can't DO as much, and a car is just far easier to drive. IMHO.
FYI I love to debate.

IMHO.
FYI I love to debate.
lol...I have never used a vehicle to sleep with a girl...I've been with the same girl for almost 3 years, before that I was with one for 6 months and before that almost 4 years. I'm no expert, but I'm definitely not an idiot when it comes to women or motorcycles.
If you look at the negatives you can make anything seem useless and a waste of time. And mr2s are actually quite common, if you look at production numbers they are more common than a 240sx...and it's not the only 2 seater...300zx (except for some that are 2+2), rx7 (except for some that are 2+2), fiero...many performance cars offer the same amount of seating as a motorcycle, just more storage space.
You seem like you've never ridden a motorcycle or at least never owned one so your argument means nothing...the enjoyment of a motorcycle far outweighs the negatives which is why they still exist even with these amazingly superior machines like the 240sx and the POS this thread was created about.

this motorcycle bullshit is ruining the thread which is why I did not retaliate. Really, if you wanna contest this, start another thread about motorcycle vs car. We're talking about an extremely economic small car here
lol
2wheels>4wheels???
what the fuck are you talking? Motorcycles? I thought this was a car forum and the discussion was on cars. Cut the salt out and shut your face
As you put it, cut the salt out and shut your face...it's a car forum and this thread was about your thoughts on the car...my thoughts are it sucks.
If your initial response to my post was a bit more polite I may have respected your wishes.

That's retarded. An S13 would be just as destroyed, hell an SUV that hit a Semi head on would kill everyone involved.
Don't be lame.

anywho, this thread is massively off-topic. klohiq, just STFU. no one else cares if you want to daily a motorcycle. and a point for you: the motorcycle came before the car. if it really was the end all of transportation, the car would have never gotten past patent motorwagen stage. but it isn't. get over it and stop cluttering this thread.

Never said it was "the end all of transportation"...you guys need to read before you write, all I said was this particular 4 wheeled vehicle is IMO not any better than many 2 wheeled vehicles.
With your thought process a v6 is better than an i4...so everyone with a 240sx needs to swap in a v6 because an i4 is a POS and it's worthless and it's gay.
Didn't the tricycle come after the bicycle? GO RIDE A BIG WHEEL ASSHAT :keke:

Actually I wouldn't be surprised if a passenger would survive that crash. The cabin remained intact.

My review of a smart cabrio:
Interior: Seats are kind of nice. Rest is OMG SUX. Dash is OMG SUX. There is NOTHING displayed, you have to cycle through **** to see ****.
Taking off:
The automatic manual transmission ****ing blows.
There is no clutch pedal for take off, so the car manages declutching itself, and if you dont take off super fast, it ****ing vibrates cause the engine gets so ooo very close to stalling.... with a take off pedal it would be much smoother.
Shifting: I used it in semi auto mode which isn't bad, cause there is a clutch, it's not the feeling of no-control that shiftronics have. In auto mode, it's ok, but it feels weird when it shifts from 1st to 2nd, cause the car slows down a bit (the shift is rather slow)
Acceleration: 0-60 was better than expected. 90 to 120 takes absolutely forever.
Handling: Bumpy ride. Almost as bumpy as my 240 with the koni shocks. Handling is absolutely terrible. Carrying a coffee in Montreal proved to be a ****ing impossible mission.
Driveability: On University(pretty steep hill road in Montreal), it ****ing sucked to take off, because the hill is steep and the auto declutch thing sucks. You have to smash the gas else it just slips the clutch. The auto declutch doesnt work well in Reverse, you have to give it a lot of gas on a small hill else it starts moving forward...
Automatic roof: That is pretty sweet. one button and it goes down, push it in the trunk and bam, gayest car on earth.
Bottom end: I'll take a yaris at 7l/100km way before a Smart at 3l/100km. The seats in the smart are better. Everything else blows. However, I got more attention in there than I would in a pink lamborghini. Driving it is ok on the highway, but in the city, it blows because it's not smooth shifting, it bounces everywhere, and accelerating is a pain in the ***.

Company car heh.
Uses about 35l of gas (that is less than 10 gallons for you imperial guys) for a Montreal-Toronto roundtrip (1100km/660miles), so even though I really don't like the way it drives, I can accept that a company wants one, especially since it's a good platform for advertising.

Wtf who CARES what you drive up to a restaurant in?? Are you that vain that you think people actually care what you look like?
Are you so naive that you think they don't? The key to pulling it off is not caring what they think.
Car vs motorcycle isn't a debate... nobody is saying that any car is better than any motorcycle. Bikes are cheaper because they cost less to build. People buy fucking cobalts and sentras for more than a good bike costs. But they do it.
This car is not built for performance. Its built to carry a couple of people around town with a little bit of cargo. and do it cheaply, easily and relatively safely. A car's size does not make it safe or dangerous. Your own brain is your primary safety device. If you get hit head on by a semi, then it is PROBABLY your fucking fault. So if the fact that a semi creamed a smart head on is your reason to not buy the car... then you suck. Just don't hit semi trucks head on and you probably won't die.
I'd say a large minority of people (maybe 49%?) are intelligent enough to keep their own asses out of the way of some of the retards we allow on the streets in SUVs. If you're one of those people, then buy whatever car you like and suits your needs. If you can't, then buy your SUVs and Volvos and stop trying to convince the rest of us that X car or any motorcycle in the world is a deathtrap.

I would be more interested in a car about this size. I believe the wheelbase is slightly shorter than the 240, but not by a massive amount. The interior looks like shit though, way too futuristic. Kinda like the 350z interior...

Smart tops out at 90mph which is good for Highway and city driving. Yeah that concept car is nice but thats about it. Im so sick of these car companies that make such nice concepts just to do nothing with them! Mazda and Nissan are big on that. "Oh this concept will have design elements that we will emulate into up and coming cars.. blah blah blah" STFU and make the damn car already!! Also I embrace the futuristic stlying of cars. Leave that plastic mid/late 90's garbage to the 30+ crowd. Bring on the future!!

I was a little blunt...the car can make it up to 90 and I have little doubt about that. What I do doubt is that it comfortably drives anywhere near that speed. I imagine the car gets blown all over the road by semis and crosswinds.
Nissan and Mazda both have came through with some of their nicer concepts, most notably the 350z and RX8 respectively. Though I do agree they hype quite a few concepts, yet they never make it into production.

I have driven a SMART Roadster in Germany, toped out in 6th gear for most of the trip (109mph), it was incredibly smooth but a little loud. It had excellent dynamics at any speed. the thing was a blast to drive, and if they ever offered it with a real transmission stateside, I'd buy one in a heartbeat.
I also drove it here: http://www.zilvia.net/f/showthread.php?t=60933 SMART review at bottom
My foggy memory review of it is:
Pros:
-I fit in it! All 6'4" 240lbs of me fit inside the car with top up, and I could see traffic signals. suck it miatae!
-very light and nimble, it had go-kart reflexes, but without the steering ever getting light
-3 cyl turbo motor made all the right noises to make the drive more fun. While it will never be mistaken for being fast, it seems quick and involved when flogging it around town. + points for cool BOV noises.
-Great Headlights. Has Hella 90mm conversion lights seen on various 240s. They kept up with the car maxed out on the Autobahn.
-Unique profile: You won't get lost in a sea of camrys at your local grocery store.
Cons:
-Transmission: jerky clutchless manumatic. You had to anticipate the lethargic shifting, and lift for upshifts, and blip for downshifts. It also refused to hold a gear mid corner on the Ring. Also, diving into corners and firing off a few downshifts was often rewarded with bogging on entry, and an untimely downshift causing oversteer on the exit.
-Transmission: I hated it in general, it really ruined the spirit of the whole car, and was the only thing that killed the fun.
-Transmission: you get the point
-Key location: next to the flappy stick gearbox on the floor, and apparently if you don't remove it correctly it will lock up the starter. I mistook this for a dead battery and practiced the phrase "Haben Sie Starten Kablen? Mein Battery ist Kaput."
Summary:
Like a 1st gen MR2... with a warranty. If they made it with a real transmission, it'd be fun to flog everyday on my way to work within the realms of speed limits and without breaking the bank on gas. I'd think hard about getting one if they sold it here.

sounds to me like its a motorcycle engine and transmission.
In regards to pulling up front of nice restaurants.
I think most people would be impressed in the LA area. Just because a Smart would be trendy and chic.
The Smart seems like a really good idea for a second car for a lot of people.
I see nothing wrong with Mercedes relability and build quality, 40mpg, and brisk performance in a $12-$15k car with a warranty.
You have to be insane if you didn't want something with these characteristics to supplement your beat-down 18-9-year old S-chassis.
It's biggest obstacle is ignorant people who can't open their mind to anything that doesn't fit their archaic notions of what consitutes a "real" car.
The only reason I probably won't get one is that I already own 3 cars.
Otherwise, I would have put down the $99 for a reservation spot on www.smartusa.com for a red and black Passion coupe.
