I am lookin at putting in a short shifter in my car and i wanted to do a little research first. Im looking at either B & M or Megan...im leaning towards B&M the most, if there is any other great brands to choose from please let me know.

As well as my buddy told me a short shifter will screw with your gear box...is this true or avoidable. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

A short shifter shouldn't mess up anything; after all, it's just doing the same job as your other one, just with less effort. The only way it would screw with your gearbox is if you got ahead of yourself and shifted too fast or did something wrong, and ground gears.

My friend has a B&M ss. He likes it. I'm going to get one of those sometime in the future. . .

C's...got mine used for super cheap...no complaints what so ever...nismo, to my understanding isnt exactly a short shifter, but changes the pivot for more of a solid throw...ebay ones are getting better and better in design and quality, but use at your discretion (of quality and being flamed by e-thug brandwhores)...

some argue that itll make your tranny grind, but i dont believe it...the arguement does make sense and may hold some validity, but it isnt happening to me so ill keep my C's thank you very much...

eBay ftL!!!

I just sold a dash there, and the guy opened a Paypal claim after like a week and a half, even though it went to Canada (10-14 days to ship), then escalated AFTER he received the dash. He locked up my account for 2 months; it just got resolved a few days ago, so he opened up an eBay claim.

And the eBay dealers use superglue on their turbos, no joke. . . yeah just stay away from eBay.

B&M is the win.

... second would be the one on ebay from Deluboz, I have not heard a complaint about theirs yet. The thing is actually catching them with one.

WTF are you talking about?

most ebay dealers don't touch the product, and send em out direct from the containers. I worked for one eBayer.

B&M = best throw.

C's is good, but from my buddy's that have em on their car, the vibration is horrendous.

From what i read about, SS' decrease shifting time, and increase the wear and tear on the tranny syncros.

But from my personal experience, it felt right all the time, no tranny wear, and nice clear tranny fluid with no shavings or anything of the sort.

Do it right.

I talked to my friend, it is SSautochrome. He bought a turbo from them, and it was superglued together. But yeah.

The shortshifter shouldn't hurt the tranny, since all you're doing is shortening the time that you shift, because you're shortening the distance. It would only hurt it if you did something wrong, like shift too quickly or on top of the clutch or something.

The shifter from Deluboz is a good one. Looks exactly like the B&M and works very well. I've had it in for a couple years now and it's been working perfectly.

My B&M makes weird noise whenever my car is on high RPM. It is pretty annoying!

sw20>>s14
03-07-2007, 08:14 PM
the older models came with the shift knob that rattles @ high RPMs...nothing to be worried about..."ver. IIs" or whatever they call it come with revised knobs...

I recently bought a B&M when I did my tranny swap. Crappy part is I ended up getting the old version that rattles above 5500 rpms. They're the same model number just different production dates. And they cost the same. :(

I got mine from an ebay wherehouse seller so beware. I don't even think asking them will priduce a safe result since most sellers don't know where they come from they just order them. Since they're the same price if you get them on a company's website just go there. And hopefully you won't get screwed like I did. You COULD try B&M 's website.....

Overall the shifter works great and shifts real solid, it's just the rattle noise can be distracting....makes you think your clutch or tranny is going out.

Sochbat is correct. Yes the shifter shortens your throws. But it also allows you to shift faster. The faster you shift the more stress you put your syncros through. Simple math people...

I've never used knockoff ebay shifters, But I know my B&Mv2 works great. Some people who fail at life keep mis-shifting while the girly girls say it's too notchy and hard to change gears.

To follow up on the B&M shifter and the humming/rattle at high rpms, it appears that PDM racing has the newer ones just by looking at the box.

http://www.pdm-racing.com/products/drivetrain.html

The box that mine came in was different than this one. I'm assuming that this means these will be the newer version with the improved dampening.

And as for shift knobs, I have the Nismo leather knob which feels nice, but I don't see why the knob would matter as to the noise.

In a way it would put more wear because you give the syncro less time to bring the speed gear up in rpms so it can engage without grinding. With good fluid in there it shouldn't be a problem. There is also less leverage with a shortshifter because of where the pivot or fulcrum is. In a truck with a standard transmission with the shifter coming out of the floor you can put a ton of stress on the transmission because of how long the shifter is. So in all I think it kinda balances out with regards to wear on the tranny. As long as you shift properly and the maintenance is kept up there shouldn't be any problems.

When changing tranny fluid, i used Lucas gear fluid, and stabilizer. It felt a lot smoother than what the previous owner had in there.

V1 B&M rattles, but for the most part, you're a lot more likely to get a V2.

Pilot all the way for me. Unfortunately Pilot have stopped making theirs.

sochbat: I used the Lucas stabilizer in my s13 a while back...made my shifting so damn rough I changed it out with pure Royal Purple gear oil in 24 hours.

Just got the ss from delubozparts on ebay. Rattles a LOT with stock shift nob but hopefully a heavier knob will fix that.

The customer service was THE BEST i've ever recieved on ebay. Fast shipping and he sent me a free shift knob after sending the wrong one...

No, it is going to rattle EVERYWHERE above idle, I strongly suggest just getting used to it or turning up the radio. I personally found the positives to outweigh the negatives, the rattle was a small sacrifice.

I got B&M wonderful still vibrates at 5.5k rpm it just means to shift. You might have to lower the tranny to get the shifter on or off.
