Buying a US vehicle - procedures.

Hi, I was wondering what I would have to do if I wanted to buy a vehicle from the states and transfer it to be legal in Canada. Is there extensive paper work?

Would it be possible to obtain a 10 day permit and drive the car across the boarder, then register it?

If anyone has done this before and can let me know that would be great.
