Is it the electronic part of it or what?  People always say that you gotta have one when you upgrade the turbo and injectors but what do they do and why is it an upgrade for an sr20det?

Well, the Z32 afm's are bigger than the ones that are used on the 240/180/silvia.  From what I read in one of the old carboy magazine they're good to about 400-500 HP.  Thats why when you see a single turbo configuration on a high HP GTR you see two z32 afm's on the intake.  Of course you don't need it if you're running somthing like a V-pro or a VPC or similar.

Air flow. The stock MAFS is a bottleneck and won't flow enough air to support 300+hp. I don't understand running 2 of them though.

Basically you question has been answered.  MAF are really not the best for turbocharged application but is better for dailydriven cars.  The FD is speed density which has it good and bad.

The best case senario would be to remove the MAF completly.  From HKS thier VPC, FCON-S and FCON-V Pro will all remove the MAF.

Apex'i does have one version of the Power FC that will allow you to remove the MAF but i'm not sure if they have an application for the SR I do know they have it for the RB26DETT.
