OK I have a S14 black top sr and was wondering if there is a way to test if the vtc. I think it working fine I just wanted to know is there any way to test it if it goes bad? Also this might be stupid but has anybody ever tried hooking a vafc to the car to see if it would work with the vtc. I don't have an afc yet, so I don't know if this is even possible. I order an apexi neo about a week ago and think would the vafc work with the vtc. I don’t think it will but I figure I would ask.

first off, VTC/NVCS is nothing like vtec, so a VAFC will do nothing for it, and there is no reason for it either. It is variable CAM TIMING, it advances the intake cam timing on the low end to give you low end torque, then retards it back at the top end. NeoVVL is nissans version of vtec (in a nutshell).

If you want to test your's to see if its working, theres a whole bunch of info in the S14/S15 FSM's, the quick way is to disconnect the wire connection on the solenoid, its the one to the left of the oil cap. You'll feel a difference in power down low if it was working before. If the actual assembly in the hump is going out, it will rattle like hell and sound like a diesel.
