View Full Version : losing oil, oil on spark plug threads, after rebuild

hey guys, so the nearly stock ka24de is pretty much drinking oil after i rebuilt the head. i'll be short about it:

-rebuilt head, new valve seals, bronze valve guides, radial exhaust cut, 3angle intake, etc
-i reused the stock head studs. they didn't look too stretched, but they are kinda old
-compression checks out alright
-misfire occasionally, random idle occasionally
-car feels good
-no leaks, replaced all gaskets, no oil puddles...
-oil isn't milky, hg torqued properly, etc

-car consumes about 1qt of oil every 500 miles
-there is faint coating of oil on the spark plug threads (not the actual electrode, but it may be burning off)

i'm really at a loss to figure out what it is. it could be blowby, or failing piston rings, since i didn't change them out while i was rebuilding the head (wasn't leaking oil from the rings before, but the valve guides were shot)

i think i just wanted a second opinion.

thanks

the only problem really is the oil consumption is which ridiculous.

Did you assemble the head yourself?

valve cover gasket between the spark plugs. When you buy a valve cover gasket, you get two..one for the spark plugs and one for the valve cover itself.

Check that you installed it correctly or that it has a clean surface.

did you adjust the pistons rings right.

didn't touch rings, i rebuilt the head myself. i mentioned all new gaskets..this includes the spark plug gasket.

Well if there is oil on the top of the spark plugs most likely you pooched them when you installed them...

Other than that unless you cracked the head somehow there is no way for oil to get on top of the spark plugs.

What kind of exhaust color is your car producing?

what did i screw up? lol the spark plug threads have oil, that's inside the chamber.

i'm slightly worried the engine builder (i took the head to a machine shop) screwed up the assembly. he did my buddy's motor (completely, not just the head) and he totally F'ed everything, so we ended up reassembling the entire engine.

the exhaust gas is colorless, however i'm developing a slight black trail on the bumper. heh, probably rings huh...=/

Rings or cracked ringlands on the pistons, sorry dude.

I assume it looks somewhat like that, though not as bad... in which case, yes, rings/pistons.

then the machinist who put in the seals did it wrong. or fucked soemthing up...which actually is possible since he's an idiot (found this out later). don't goto costa mesa rnd machine shop.

i had new bronze guides put in, along with a valve job and seals. reshimmed too.

sounds like valve seals to me, i hope your machinist will cover it

whats your compression like

do a compression test

why would the seals have failed in all of them? done all 16 of them wrong? well, i could take off the exhaust/intake mani and look inside.

i've been lazy...haven't done comp test yet. did one a while back (before rebuild), was fine.
