Here is what the organizer Ken Takahashi has to say about the event:

Hello everyone, Ken here…. For some of you might remember me as “Ken” from Motorex, or “Ken” the guy how brought C-West & Uchi, or “Ken” from Best Motoring aka “American Touge” or finally “Ken” one of the Formula D judge. Either Ken you know you probably know me. And I probably know many of you guys too….

That’s why I’m happy to announce to you guys 1st the launch of my new event “American Gymkhana”. With the support and advice from some Japanese manufactures & Drift Association were bringing one of Japan’s most popular and oldest grassroots motorsport. History has proven the most successful are the events that were started by the “people” like Import drags started from street racing, Hot Import Nights started from car clubs hanging out at night, and Drifting…. Well need I say more?

Well, I encourage you guys to come out and try it. It will be fun, it’s like time attack meets drifting in autocross. Short course & you will get time slips challenging your fellow drivers. You can run with your Scion, Fit, Subaru, G35 pretty much anything except SUV’s and you don’t have to driving 100 out into the boonies to run. You don’t have to have a FR (rear wheel drive) car to have fun in Gymkhana, All-wheel drive and mid-ships are fine too. Were going to be right next to Irvine Spectrum. Our event is going to be on March 31st (Saturday) at El Toro. So, please visit my site www.gymkhanausa.com register to run (price is for all day) and please support the cause.

“Let’s build something together”

Thanks,
Ken

I had the same question in regards to seat time

But I assume it should move pretty fast even though its 60 people, since there are two run courses going at the same time, and its only one time through

And you always have the dudes who don't run a full day, so that opens up more time

Werd. I believe I'd be in Unlimited class for no CAT and motor swap. Gay city.

120$ is a shiat load... thus the seat time question. I hear in JPN you get like, 4 runs in a day (but their gymkhana events cost like 25-50$)

$120 isn't bad, consider you save 3-4 hours of driving time to Willow or Button Willow and save yourself $50+ on gas. Ya know KA or SR isn't the most fuel efficient motor on the road and rolling in the slammed 240 will get pretty tired after 100+ miles of driving..

94cc0rd
03-01-2007, 10:59 AM
willow springs isn't that far... and a lot of people think it's worth it to be on an actual track...

I think it's a good compromise, since beginner practice days @ oval or balcony are usually $105 through just drift... the extra $15 could go for the gas that you save... or whatever...

either way, $120 for an event isn't bad at all...

i'm going to try to make it out to this event.. see what gymkhana is all about..

Isn't Gymkhana the same as Auto-x? If not inform my ignorant ass.

Read da link I posted earlier: http://www.gymkhanausa.com/

Gymkhana started in the '60 but built popularity in the 80's. Never built up popularity in the US unlike Europe and Japan. But now with the popularity of Import cars (Japanese & European) and the advent of Drifting perking the interest of auto enthusiast to focus more on driving technique than raw horsepower. Gymkhana has come full circle and has become the next big thing in the auto industry.

Sometimes called "Car Rodeo", Gymkhana is quite often compared to Autocross or Pro Solo. Although the two sports share many common similarities the Autocross & Solo course main is "time". A Gymkhana track is laid out in a matter that encourages the driver to use flamboyant driving and drifting techniques that's 1st, 2nd is time. It has been a popular sport for many years though out the world. Now its coming to America.

Gymkhana is about "control".
Gymkhana is primarily done on an open paved field or parking lot. The course is laid out with cones in key points to navigate to. The obstacle will often consist of slaloms, 180 degree turns, 360 degree turns, figure 8s, and some time parking boxes. The drivers goals is the get through the course and fast a possible with the least amount of mistakes. Gymkhana requires strong mental concentration and memorizing of the track, where you have to go and do next. The driver will use many techniques to effectively go through a course. Acceleration, braking, drifting & grip driving are all necessary for Gymkhana. Widely popular internationally, in Europe, Malaysia, Australia, and Japan.

yeah, willow springs is bad ass

but to have an event in OC is super cool, especially since El Toro was closed to a lot of motorsports events for a while

el toro is right off the 5 in irvine, so its central to people from SD and LA, and perfect for the OC guys

we talked to the organizer and he said that for $120, you can run ALL DAY as MANY TIMES as you want

so that should be a LOT of seat time, especially since a lot of drivers often sandbag after around lunch time and go home

this isnt lame like autox where you have to work the track. u wont need to work the track, no need to pick up cones, just go and DRIVE!

this should be a great start to REAL GYMKHANA in the usa, especially with the amount of support from over 17 manufacturers (ex: A SPEC!, Autobacs, Bridgestone, Toyo, Nitto, Falken, Tanabe, HKS, BRIDE, 5Zigen, C-West, RSR, JIC, Mazda)

yes yes... it will be very legit and organized to where every one in each class has a chance on doing well....

$25-$50 for a gymkhana is wonderful if we were in japan... unfortunately it cost more here in the US w/ insurance and all.... i guess you can rest assure that that money you put into the event would pretty much insure your health...

its a little steep but I cannot really give an opinion as far as how the event is or if its really worth my $125 until i try it out at least once... so i'm gonna sign up just to see how it is.... i'd say do the same before you start talkin smak about an event you haven't even tried yet.... i don't mean this on you 94cc0rd i ment to say this to everyone in general....

For Immediate Press Release:

American Gymkhana Association (Torrance, CA) would like to thank it’s sponsors and all that came out to attended the kick off of the 1st inaugural event at El Toro fields in Irvine California, March 31st 2007. It was a groundbreaking event; "successful" is to say the least. With original expectations set at 30 to 40 participants and 300-600 spectators, we had 78 participants and over 1,800 spectators! The event drew in a good mix of auto enthusiast from all over the industry. OE’s like Mitsubishi came out with their 2008 New Lancer, Powerhouse tuners like Crawford Performance, RSR & XS came out with their cars. Professional drivers came out like Rally America’s Ken Block & Tanner Foust also Formula D pro drifters Dai Yoshihara, Chris Forsberg, Alex Pheiffer, Stephan Verdier, Samuel Hubinette and D1’s Toshiki Yoshioka. Many that came out felt the vibe and excitement of the good’ old days when import drag racing first came into the scene. IGN.com called it "one of the best grassroots events they ever attended".

As any sport evolves, even a very niche sport like drifting has found itself grown out of the budget of the common enthusiast as it has become mainstream. Gymkhana fills that gap and provides a race venue not just for rear wheel driver cars, but also for front wheel drives, all-wheel drives and even low house powered econ cars like the Honda Fit & Scion’s. American Gymkhana Association is not making a new sport, only reintroducing a sport that has been around for a while, well respected and rich in history to a new generation of drivers, and re-energized a market with parallel synergy from Autocrossing, Drifting and Rally interests consumer. Giving them one big playing field. Our courses are going to integrate things that American drivers are familiar with but a hybrid of all 3 sports.

American Gymkhana’s backbone is the strong support from manufactures that believe in the strength of grassroots, and it is people that participate in these events fashion the future of this industry. With the endorsements from some of the most respected companies in the industry: 5 Zigen, A Spec Products, Autobacs USA, BRIDE, Falken Tires, Meguiars, Pacific Rim, Tanabe, Toyo Tires and Works Bell. We are at the forefront of a NEW Motorsport trend in the US and would like to thank you for your support.

Because of popular demand we are in planning phase for the next event scheduled in mid June. Bigger and Better, American Gymkhana will be held in the same place (EL Toro in Irvine California) but will be adding a larger vendors area along with Japanese food vendors and Japanese festival games (obon) to integrate not just a Japanese inspired Motorsport but to bring the full JDM feel to the US.

If you have questions on how you can be involved in the next event please contact me at: [email protected]
