you should read through the threads on this forum (i know search can give u a white screen a lot) - but i like hankook rs-2, the azenis, and the MX's... never tried them but i've heard Federals are the shiznit.

Depends on what you are using the tires for. What kind of driving?
There have been quite a few tire threadson Zilvia. Even if the Search button isn't working for you, it's not hard to click through page by page in Tech and look for Tire Topics.

Personaly, I like BFGoodrich g-Force Sports. They provide me with excellent traction and wear for daily driving.

What is your price range for tires? and what size are you looking to run?

Jung918
02-25-2007, 03:52 PM
If your just daily driving, then I would suggest the Falken 512. If you want something with better performance without breaking the bank, then I would suggest the RS-2, MX, 615... I hear the federal 595 are good tires also but I have never tried them.

a lot of tires are better then the 512 but they are pretty cheap. I got all 4 tires in 205/60/15 for less then 200.

I always used to run the falken st115 front and back and those were cheap and grippy for me
my friend just put a set of federals on his car and I really like the way they feel at the track. They will more than like be my next set of tires since the st-115's are discontinued.

I've been using the MX for the most part. its an awesome good all-around tire. It grips good (maybe not as good as the 615's but very good nonetheless), doesn't overheat easily, last fairly long for a hi-po tire, quiet, affordable, and weighs reasonable. some ppl say it doesn't have good wet grip, but i can't say for sure since i drive really slow in the wet anyways. since the MX don't overheat as easily as the 615's they're prob a better track tire for lapping on a track. I've had personal track exp on the MX with a miata, civic, and as a dd on my crx. they're also very predicatable to push as they give good feedback/

the 615's i haven't had any personal exp with, but like the 215's they relplaced, they can grip better than the MX in the dry and wet, overheat a bit easier, will not last as long, are loader. basically other than the overheating properties, i get the impression its more if an aggressive hi-po tire than the MX. The 615's are also very grippy when cold, so maybe they're a better choice for autoX and street driving.

I breifly had the 215's on another car, but i crashed before bieng able to fully test the tires. i never took the car to any track event, so maybe its not a fair test. the 215's prob were the grippiest tires I've driven on, except for kumho r-compound victoracers. they grip well in the wet too, but i did not find them predictable. they would give abruptly, so i did not like to push my car too hard with them. its also one of the reasons why i crashed my car (the other reason being stupidity).

451s are not discontinued completely, some sizes that i guess werent selling well, became 452s. same with some sizes of 512s became 452s and theyre marketing it as a 'euro/vip' tire.

federal 595 is good, but for some reason the 18's chunk up super fast.

hankook hrII is durable but not super grippy

hankook rs2 is grippy but wears quickly. good rain tire though.

slightly off topic, but where do you guys get your MX/615/Z212's at? Im trying to find the best tire prices possible.

for shipping reference, i live in socal. for MX, I find the best deal at tirerack.com. they also offer good pricing on bridgestone & advans. for the z212's and the 615's i think discounttiredirect.com has the best deal. they have a flat/free shipping fee anyways. however, edgeracing.com seems to have a slightly better deal on the 615's if you live close to the east coast, and good overall pricing on the toyo t1-r's and the ra-1's.

i agree for the most part, however i think at the very least you should be using falken 512's or kumho spts/712 supra's. running some costco or 4 tires for $100 special is just unsafe. personally i'm horrified of driving on any all-seasons period. poor quality tires is the last thing i'd skimp on. good tires are not only the best upgrade you can do for the $, its also a matter of having much safer car imho.

nothing's wrong with costco tires. its all a matter of preference. i feel anything less than SPT's are unsafe. it's all debatable of course.

you don't have to be an aggressive driver to benefit from stickier tires. its an extra measure of safety anyone could benefit from. Being able to stop the car just few feet less, or not skid out of control from an otherwise a poorer performing tire isn't a bad thing for any daily driver.

BUMP!!!!

I'm reviving this thread because it makes more sense than creating an entirely new one, and only one post mentioned road noise.

I'm shopping for new tires for my car, and will probably puchase from Discount Tire, choosing from these: http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/toggleShowingAllTireProducts.do?rc=CASINT&yr=1991&cf=false&sw=false&fcpr=&rcc=Solana%25252520Beach&rf=true&mk=NISSAN&fclr=&fcsr=&cs=205&dVeh=dVeh&vid=006374&rd=15&ar=60&fcs=false&ct=null&fcb=

Tires will be used for daily driving, and they'll be mounted stock alloys. I run BFGoodrich Touring T/A's which screech like no other when making a sharp turn and have shitty road noise.

What I am looking for in tires, prioritized:

Road noise: very low, S13's are noisy enough
Grip: decent....track quality not necessary
Cost: looking to spend $80 or less per tire

Your recommendations will be much appreciated (esp S13 owners)!
Thanks!

+1 for edgeracing. I have bought dozens of tires from them. Cheaper than any local store and fast shipping.

I never go wrong with my Toyo FZ4's

besides that call around to local stores until you find one that has used tires. You can get a good set of slightly used Z-rated Michelin's, Pirelli's or Dunlops for $70 a pair if you find the right place! Its a must for drifters.

You're looking for a TOURING tire, not a sport tire. A lot of tires will fit your bill, since quiet seems to be the most important aspect here. Honestly, I cant understand WHY you would want such a basic tire on a sportscar.. but then again, if you're running stock wheels... it all makes perfect sense.

All I have to say is dont complain about performance, because NO tire of that price will perform "amazingly." It will all be pretty ordinary in terms of handling and squeel.

Remember, there is a difference between tire squeel (when pushing the tire) versus road noise. What you asked for was very little roadnoise, not squeal.

I've had good experience with edgeracing in the past. however, i have read recently at some other forums that they've begun to slip in service. hopefully this isn't true, as they offer the best pricing on toyos that i know of, and very competitive prices for falkens (discount tire ends up being a little cheaper b/c of shipping costs). a shame they seem to have stopped carrying bridgestones. they used to have good deals on the s-03's.

you haven't mentioned tire size (important b/c it determines price), but i'm guessing you prob referring to 17's. I don't know, i dont think you could get a lot of tire for that amount. If i were under that criterion, I'd prob opt for the Falken 512's. they're a proven decent performer, comfy, and very reasonable in cost. I'd be very reluctant to settle for anything less in quality.

Falken 512 all season tires suck balls, completly worthless. I like the st-115 and the fk 452s. Will be trying out the rt-615 next, along with some federals 595. Edgeracing.com is ok, but discounttiredirect.com is normally cheaper once you factor in shipping.

Bridgestone RE01R they are actually being sold less then japan market price.
or if you want something less try Yokohama we use them in D1 held up pretty well.
Usually I would look for different choices of tires, then wait for companies to dump them(tire need to be clear out once awhile at warehouses) and pick them up below dealer cost.

The link I provided had the size 205/60/R15 selected, but I guess it wasn't clear enough.

No, I don't opt for high performance tires on my old sportscar. Sorry if anyone finds this appalling. I guess I could spend $$$ on tires that don't suit my needs and drift/track/etc or pretend I'm a speed racer and go nuts on the road. Or I could buy another car just to suit my non-sportscar tire choice. Nah. Boo-hoo.

Remember, there is a difference between tire squeel (when pushing the tire) versus road noise. What you asked for was very little roadnoise, not squeal.
Is there a tire that has low road noise and minimum squeal when making a sharp turn, or is that contradictory?

I think the RE92 bridgestone is a decent tire, i recall driving on a set when my brother had some on his stock s14. its a very acceptable tire.

imo, the RE750 is a fantastic tire.. if you can justify spending a lill bit more - but its worth it. its one of my favorite "affordable" bridgestone tires.

remember, a tire's traction isnt just for accellerating and handling - its also your limiting factor when it comes to braking, as well as rain performance. to me, having a high quality tire is an absolute must. but hey, thats just me.

quick check, tirerack lists the RE750 @ 105
i cant find decent pricing for the RE92, but i dont recall it ever being expensive (although tireracks price is nutty)
also, the yoko ES100 is decent and very affordable.

my mistake on that count. still there are different wheel/tire sizes for stock applications. if the poster is asking a question, it doesn't hurt to be more specific.

The link I provided had the size 205/60/R15 selected, but I guess it wasn't clear enough.

ok, if its the 205/15 size then you should have a good selection of choices. For your price and criterea, I would opt for the kumho spt's then. i know they come in 205/50/15, but im uncertain about the 205/60/15 . tirerack has some good tire tests and reviews on that. it should be quiet and perform decently.

note however, that its not easy to for other ppl to say whats a comfy tire or not. thats a subjective measure. personally the only tire i felt was a bit too noisy (only b/c i didnt want the wrong attention from the wrong ppl) were the azenis 215's.

The nittos are good tires, you do realize that nitto is just Toyo USA, both made in Japan. Great grip and they last quite a long time.

Maybe when you drove your friend's car the tires were dead cold. They performed great on the track and still look brand new.

my car had gone thru 4 sets of tires
2003
original tire with steel rim : cant even remember what brand it was
comment: duh!
2004
change to 17s with federal with 595 (215/45/R17)
comment: good upgrade from stock, pretty cheap as "performance tire" traction is alright, enough for me to spin out (540) on dry surface when doing 70 on freeway trying to dodge a TV size box, stock suspension tho, also blew on me once when normally driving in summer, yes, not leakin pressure, BLEW! and with a lot of thread remaining. later on that year i changed to coilover.
mid 2005
(heart transplanted)
2006
start running 18s with FK512 (F225/40/R18, R245/35/R18)
comments: better than 595, good for daily drving, and ONLY with daily driving, cornering sux, sidewall is waaay too soft, however, wet traction is better than dry, i consider these tires are rain friendly tires, mad understeer on corners, never count on them unless you want to hit a tree, or pole, or curb or whatever.
2007
same rims with RT615 (F225/40/R18, 255/40/R18)
comment: superb DRY surface traction, very hard sidwall, with fender rolled i can finally step on it freely in corners and feel the power delivery, ideal tires for bang in the buck and grip driving lover, you can still do donuts/burnout, but for slide/drift without at least 350hp on the wheels, its not your choice of tire. downside is noisy, a big no no if u want to listen to piano music and driving on freeway. also very unpredictable on rainy days, i lost my front bumper because of it and with some strong wind and a little uneven road surface it can hydroplane on freeway.

hope that help

My friend had a set of kumho before, but the result is that he doesnt like it much and he rather spent money on Japanese tires

i'm running on a set of 235/40/17 Dunlop SP Sport Maxx... they are expensive but very comfortable on LA's torned up roads... They grip ok but not as grippy as the Federal 595ss on an auto-x/gymkhana course...

A set of 215/45/17 federal 595ss gripped better than this set of 235/40/17 SP Sport Maxx... they are just not as comfortable for daily driving... but why should I complain... I have blown tein HE, solid subframe bushing and a KAAZ LSD....

has anyone used the kumho ast's? just wondering if they are a good tire or not. thanks

you mean the kumho asx? my aunt has them on her wrx wagon. They seem to be decent for an all-season tire. cheap, comfy, and seem to last long. i rarely ever drive her car, but the times that I have, it does seem to grip reasonable even though i don't want to push it (not my car). She doesn't drive too aggressively either.

you ought to check out tirerack. they have a lot more reviews and possibly road tests for the kumho asx.

slightly off topic, but where do you guys get your MX/615/Z212's at? Im trying to find the best tire prices possible.

for shipping reference, i live in socal. for MX, I find the best deal at tirerack.com. they also offer good pricing on bridgestone & advans. for the z212's and the 615's i think discounttiredirect.com has the best deal. they have a flat/free shipping fee anyways. however, edgeracing.com seems to have a slightly better deal on the 615's if you live close to the east coast, and good overall pricing on the toyo t1-r's and the ra-1's.

i purchased my Z212's from edgeracing.com Great prices and fast shipping :)

The nittos are good tires, you do realize that nitto is just Toyo USA, both made in Japan. Great grip and they last quite a long time.

Did you just say that they have great grip AND last a long time?

Thats like having a girlfriend who is sexy, loves to fuck, and ISNT psychotic.

Just look at their website, NITTO sucks.. they are ALL about hype and marketing..

Dam Nitto must have done something horrible to you if you're hating on them this much. Can you really judge a tire from a website and a few experiences with other people's cars?

Fine, lend me a set of 555's.. I'll be more than happy to re-evaluate my opinion on them. I just think they have a hell of a hard time competing with some of my more preferred tires of choice.

6.5 months past, my rear 615 is pretty much gone, not bad as hg tire, and since i have over 0.2 neg camber i cant complain much with daily driving... and since its summer time, i dun need to worry about wet surface coz ill be fucked if it rains. will definitely buy again.

btw... will it be dangerous if i mix different tire for front and rear? my 615 fronts are still in good shape, but im thinking of try out some other brand... :s

i tried so many tires by now but those are my favourites
on my list

FRONT OR REAR

1) federals 595. awsome, awsome all around tire. lots of grip. no chunking. price is awsome. let it cool off at the truck between runs otherwise it wont last at all (thats true for any tire really) FRONT OR REAR

2) falken st115. good luck finding those anymore. fk452 are similar but once again you are paint for the name tag. smoke good grip well. FRONT OR REAR

one tire above all - best grip, smoke - rt615. but IMHO that tire belongs in the front unless you are over 300hp. FRONT OR REAR

REAR ONLY TIRES.

if you are broke, but you need a set for a drift event:

Coopers Zpt.... holy fuck those bitches will last. but beware dont grip so well 400 A A REAR ONLY

NEXENS 3000 - really cant go wrong, but they DONT smoke. but who cares, for practise events this is it. REAR ONLY

dont bother with nankang or etc, if you do WANLI is ok. just ok. but is so cheap

My RT615>Hand cock RS2.. Both great tires.. But 615 is grippier. Perhaps the reason why I was able to corner much better with the 615 is because of the confidence level in predictability over the RS2...
