Man Buys Copy of Declaration of Independence for $2.48 and It May Be Worth 100,000 Times That

NASHVILLE, Tenn. Feb 23, 2007 (AP)— A rare, 184-year-old copy of the Declaration of Independence found by a bargain hunter at a Nashville thrift shop is being valued by experts at about 100,000 times the $2.48 purchase price.

Michael Sparks, a music equipment technician, is selling the document in an auction March 22nd at Raynors' Historical Collectible Auctions in Burlington, North Carolina. The opening bid is $125,000 and appraisers have estimated it could sell for nearly twice that.

Sparks found his bargain last March while browsing at Music City Thrift Shop in Nashville. When he asked the price on a yellowed, shellacked, rolled-up document, the clerk marked it at $2.48.

It turned out to be an "official copy" of the Declaration of Independence one of 200 commissioned by John Quincy Adams in 1820.

He didn't know he had such a valuable piece until doing some online research and then having appraisers at Raynors' offer an opinion.

You never know what you're gonna find in those kinda places.... that's why I always take a look when I know about a garage sale etc... sometimes you get some really good buys.

Reminds me of a story I heard about a couple years ago... This guy bought a painting at a garage sale for about $5.00, and just for the hell of it, gets it appraised and finds out it's a one of a kind painting, by some very famous artist, that was actually thought to have been destroyed by the Nazi's during ww2. He sold the painting at auction for around $5,000,000US.

Money in the bank, shorty what you drank?

I wouldn't put it up for auction yet. I'd let it sit with the family, make up some historical BS.

"My Great great great great grand father used to make shirts for John Quincy Adams. His name was Bruce Lee Men. He also taught John Quincy Jeet Kun Did, the basis of Jeet Kun Do."

I can see it now...

This reminds me of a friend of mine, all he does is resale antiques and what not and a few months ago he came across an old clay pot. Anyways to make a long story short he found it was an acoma pot and it sold on ebay for 11k to some museum.
