A guy i know said since i have an 89 240sx that i should get hte whole clip vs just hte engine because i need more stuff for that year. Is this true?

That makes no sense whatsoever. The 89 was SOHC, but I'm pretty sure that the engine harness can still be used to make the SRs harness fit.
If you can afford a clip though, get a clip, they are better regardless of the year of your car. Not only do they add protection to parts during shipping, but they also have virtually all of the parts necessary to complete the swap (some small things will be needed, and usually they still don't come with the downpipe).

one thing you will need to use the SR is the power steering reservoir...

Your friend is right. You need to get the power steering resoirvor and the lines. You also need the ac compressor if you want ac and some other little things (correct me if i'm wrong). THe front clip will be best for you if you plan on doing the swap yourdelf otherwise if you bring it to a shop that does sr swaps it might be easier and cheaper to just get the engine, tranny, etc. withought the clip.

trust me, from experience, get a sr clip. There are things on there that you can either sell or use. Especially if you get type X clip, then you can use brakes too. STuff like smic you can sell to make up for the price difference between clip/engine. Also there's no worry if parts will all come... Plus stuff like bumper and body panels... GET THE CLIP.

from one unheard voice to another, a front clip or just "clip" as refered to here is damn near everything from the fire wall/bulkhead to the front bumper.

I got to witness an installed SR that was taken from a front clip today. There were plenty of SRs that were scored as engine and trannys only.
The install looked like it was from the factory. The owner was able to use all of the plastic intake piping. It looked like he just swapped the block out with an KA. The car was quiet as well. It was a total sleeper. It was a 91 FB. The one thing that gave it away was it was running a huge exhaust can but it was quiet. A NA would have sounded soo much louder.
I want a front clip. I want the fenders and front end and I just think they are worth the money. You get all of the brackets and stuff too.

don't expect to get usable body panels from a clip....they stack clips on top of each other plus the clips have usaully been in a nasty wreck...my s14 clip was THRASHED but everything inside was still good....the guy must have flipped the car many many times....
