there's a large empty spot in the upper-left-most section of the engine bay. If it's not empty, and a metal thing is there with a bunch of metal pipes coming out of it (the assembly is the ABS system) then you've got ABS, obviously.

The other way is to try locking up your brakes. Go pretty fast (maybe 40mph) and slam the brakes. If you hear a consistent squeel, you don't have ABS. If the squeal "chatters", you've GOT ABS.

now that i think about it..im not even sure if i have ABS or not..

i have a 95 base model..and i know ABS is optional..since it says so on the

socal240sx.org

it says ABS is optional..how can i tell..besides doing other methods u said..any other way to find out? make the dash light up the ABS light or something?

pump the brakes or something? if it gets harder and harder [dont think dirty] does that mean u odnt have it?

If you're going to go through the trouble of pumping the brakes, why not just try to lock them up?

No, if they get harder and harder while you're pumping, that does not mean you don't have ABS. ABS really only kicks in when the brakes normally would be locked up, so if you are pumping the brakes, but not locking them up, there is no way to tell if you have ABS or not (without using one of the above methods described by Ace).

**Edit** And no Ace, if your next comment below is saying that I think looking under your hood is hard, you have to re-read my statement. **Edit**

probably the easiest way is to look at your gauges and if under your spedometer you have a led with "Anitilock" above it you have it, if the light is on its not working. at least thats how it is on my 93 s13. Maybe you still have it even if you dont have the light but thats one way that you would know...Good luck!

I don't see how looking under your hood is all that hard??

Basically, can you see your winsheild wiper motor or is there a large complex assembly in the way (The ABS system)??

The ABS warning light is cutout in all dashboards. If you have ABS, there'll be a small dash light behind it, so if you want to go that route, you'd have to take your dash apart to find out if you've got ABS.

While your under the hood, just open up the fuse box that is there and see if there is a fuse/link in the ABS's spot(not a normal wimpy fuse, a fuseable link). If it is empty, no ABS. If there is a fuse there you have ABS.

im sorry but its painfully obivous if u dont have abs. i hit my brakes in the rain once and almost slid into a intersection. if u have abs and u slam on the brakes you can feel the pedal pumping. abs actually pulsates ur brakes alot a times a second when u lock them. also when u start the car you can hear the abs computer let out a short series of small beeps. sorta hard to hear if u listen to loud music like me
