my 89 240SX isn't starting its not making the cranking noise. it just doesn't do anything.
but my car has power and the windows/headlighjts and everything work. but the damn thing wont start. i took it to kragen and they checked it out and they said the battery is fine, and its not the alternater either. so im guessing its the starter. people tell me that if you hit the starter it might start. i havent been able to locate the starter yet but i have to know do i hit the thing while im turning the key? or do i just hit it and then start?
also wat else can the problem be? can it be a fuel pump? or something of that sort?
i do have 2 leaking fuel injectors and my car has been making a strong gas smeel in the eninge bay. so that miight be it.
my car is still stuck outside my work and i dont know how long it can be just sitting out there b4 i get towwed.

Starter is located underneath the car at the flywheel (at the front side of the tranny). I've never heard of hitting it to get a car going, but why not give it a shot. You can rule out the fuel pump, cuz it would try to crank over, but just won't start. I'd check the starter first, then maybe the distributor. More than likely the starter if you say its not the battery or alternator.

I would NOT hit the starter if I were you...that will more likely do more harm than good. It's nothing mechanical though, it has to be electrical because anything mechanical (with the acception of a seized engine) will at least turn over the engine, it just won't start. Do you get any noise whatsoever?
I've never heard of kragen before so I'm just going to guess that it's a local mechanic shop. Out of curiosity, why didn't you have them find out the problem? Watch and learn my friend, that's the best way to figure out how to diagnose a problem.

When you turn the key over to start the car, if you hear a "clicking" noise, then most likely your starter relay is working, and that means you need to change to a new starter.
If you turn over the key and hear "nothing", "no click", not even a cat meowing, then check the starter relay first.

Excellent ideas above. The other two possible things I would check are idoit things: 1) the button on the clutch that needs to be depressed b/f it will start and 2) if you have an alarm, make sure it is working properly.
Also keep in mind that you CAN push start a manual 240sx - if it runs after that, you can rule out everything but the starter system.

i have push started the car already and it worked.. this was a few days ago, but then after that it did start a couple of times.. like 3 times and then.. it died on me agian.. so im guessing its the starter?
there is no noise at all when i try to turn the key
kragen is a auto parts store, they had a machine that checked the battery and they said my battery is fine, and so is my altanator.
Kid Zelda said he would swapp my starter for me.. hmm.. i wonder how much thats gonna cost me

91CRXsiR: It is probably the clutch switch. It is located behind the clutch pedal and only allows the car to start when it is pushed in. If it is an auto then it is probably the neutral position sensor, I do not know where this is located. Either on the shifter or the tranny.
Also, get those injectors fixed! They are causing the gas smell and are a dangerous problem. Most of the time it is just the little rubber O-ring that is bad and it isn't a difficult thing to replace.
anotheraznguy: Sounds like either a battery problem or a starter problem. Have the battery check at a parts store.
