View Full Version : Ball-Bearing fell out of my trans...

The transmission in my 95' 240sx took a shart last week and I've aquired a 90' SOHC transmission to replace it. I've removed the bellhousing from the SOHC and while working on it the trans tipped over on it's side... when this happened a single ball-bearing bounced out of the shifter access port.

I've looked at the area and cannot see where a bearing could expell itself unless the output shaft bearing is toast and that just happen to fall out. However, the transmission turns freely and nothing else appears to be loose. The only theory I can come up with is that the shifter port was exposed while this transmission sat in storage at a shop for MONTHS, it is possible a roque bearing happened to fall into the port and upon my tipping it, the bearing fell back out. :/

I considered taking the tailshaft cover off to check for sure, but I'm afraid that if I do, I wont be able to get the transmission back together. I already had some troubles as the spacer began to deviate about 1" away from the tailshaft case, taking the internal assemblies with it. I had to move it around a great deal to get everything lined up once more so that it would come back together.

Any ideas?

Is the right left centering bearing and spring in there?

that's like the exxon commercial. The guy takes apart his whole engine to clean it and at the gas station he is putting gas and feels something in his pocket pulls it out and its one of his valves. Talk abotu a shitty feeling

I'll verify tonight, but I looked through the FSM when I got to work this morning and it looks as if it is indeed the detent check ball. I'm breathing a sigh of relief right now, as I just anxiously await my gaskets and front/rear seals to arrive so I can put this bad boy back together.

Thanks guys,
