View Full Version : Any way to toggle ABS?
So comming up to a turn at about 75 or so in 4th, apply breaks and I can feel the ABS doing its thing and I really don't like it. Is there a way I can disconnect it via cutting a wire somewhere? If so, I wana try to set up a sort of toggle switch. Anybody done anything like this?

Mmm, I don't think you could do it without an aftermarket ECU set up for that. I beleive it's pretty deep in the code.

That sucks. I guess I'll just deal with it then...just felt awful though, I want it gone.
If I pulled the fuse, would I get ecu errors? Could I just put it back in if I wanted it back? doesn't sound like a good idea to me...
could that work transient?

I would like to add ABS to my 95 240sx-se
Anyone got some ideas?

ABS is allowed to be cut off, you can disonnect it somehow, under the hood, i think its a relay not a fuse, my friend did it on his cavalier, so i figure it must be allowed...
lemme know if you find out anything

I know that on some cars you can pull the fuse and it will be fine. I don't know about the 240 - give it a shot, worst case scenario, you have to reset the ECU.
On another note, while I don't know exactly how the 240 ABS works, I will add that it should be avoidable. ABS only kicks in when tire reaches lock up, right? I know you know that locked up tire doesn't stop you. That said, perhaps you should be a little softer on the pedal, since the goal is avoiding lockup while getting maximum braking. (at least that's what I heard on a road racing board when someone asked a very similar question). The idea is that you should never go to lockup that triggers the ABS.

abs sucks. imo its better to learn how to use regular brakes. its just more effective if done right! one thing though abs helps is in emergency cases especially on the highway. i remember reading about someone on the board that locked theres tires up at 110 and theyre all messed up now.

Ok. So the question is an abs fuse, or an abs relay. As soon as someone answers that question, then look for the abs fuse/relay. Then you grab the relay, and splice a toggle switch into it. It'll be on when the toggle switch is on, and off when the circuit is broken.

Yeah, the abs fuse would definately work, I'm pretty sure it would cause errors though...
would just a light come on? Or could it mess up other things too?

well i know on the pathfinder all the safety systems are linked. mess with the abs your also messing with the airbags. not sure about the 240 though.
I went nuts today testing out my new(ly put on) pedals. I was heal-toeing like a mofo and brakeing very hard again and abs started doin its thing :/ horrable uncontrolled feeling IMO
I'm haveing 2nd thoughts about disableing it now...I dono if I can really drive well enough yet to have it off. Although it would be nice to turn it on and off with a switch incase I got the urge to get a little sideways. I may take the fuse out later this week to see what happens, and how it reacts when I put it back in. I'd still like to make a switch (and not have to reset the ecu everytime I turn abs back on) but if I can't I'm gona just leave it intact.

ABS is definitely nice in bad weather. Could have used it today. Not a bad stop, but on a concrete road that was wet on the drivers side near the side walk, and dry on the passenger side, so I was skidding my FD wheel while the others grabbed fine. I doubt it was fast or hard enough to flat spot.
The other deal is some ABS systems are much more sensitive than others. On more aggresive cars you probably won't see it till you need it. DSC sounds like it was premature. My parents accord is very premature sometimes and others I can't get it to invoke without an actual skid. I think if you can toggle it, that would kick ass. And if you could figure it out to light your abs light when off to remind you, that would kick @$$.
I dono if it was premature or not. The tires didn't make any noise but I could feel the grip/release/grip/release thing goin on. Happened just at the end of my brakeing so who knows. I now have all my parts installed so I have nothing to do to my car for a couple weeks so I'll definately tinker with this and let you all know...I dono if I can get that light thing to work but could probably setup a different light. I'll post back in a few days and let you all know what I find. I really ought to get me an FSM sometime, that would make this a bit easier.

if you take the fuse out it will cause your abs light to stay on. you will still have brakes just no absand like someone said you can put a toggle switch between the fuse or find the wire
the fuse should be under your steering wheel. thats where it is on sentras as far as i know

dont do it
dont do it
dont do it
so are you going to do it? - probely
heres my logic - im doing 40 and i punch it and my pedal gets stuck under the mat and now im fucked because i cant stop accelerating so i dident want to shift into neutral because i would have went way over red line so i shut the car shift in to neutral and try to brake because im approaching traffic (dumb idea) so ofcourse i have no brake because the car is off and i finally get the pedal free and restrart the car and the abs light is on - car runs fine - and im like ok i shut and start the car to fix it at the next light. so i pull up to the next light, applying brake and i stop and then it happens the abs system resets so its like when they near lock up while moving but im stoped while the idle moved the car while the system war resetingh and i almost hit the car infront of me but i yanked the e brake i stoped like 2 inches from her bumper no joke so now i told this story whats my point? dont do this unless you want the system to go active everytime you turn it back on
oh and the srs light dident come on so there seperate systems
So you don't have to reset the ecu? GREAT! So when its reenabled, it just goes nuts for a second or so and its back to normal?

Basically, you would need to reset the abs every time you click it back on. Therefore, dont click it on and off when you are driving. Do it in your driveway, and wait a few seconds for it to reprogram.
If you were gonna do the whole toggle switch thing, which is a great idea, I would get thin power cable, like for an amplifier, which shoud come with an inline fuse. run an end of the wire down the fuse slot, and the other side to a mounted toggle switch. After the toggle switch, another wire to the other side of the fuse slot. Then put the fuse, of the correct amperage, into the inline holder.

that would be a really cool thing todo. someone should try it and post some pics of the installation.
I'll take some pics tomorrow if (or when rather) I get it to work.
