View Full Version : how bad is it to drive around with a bent axle?

i just hit a curb yesterday and took it to alignment shop and they said i cant fix my alignment until i get my axle replaced because its replaced and they came up with a estimate that costs more then my car. appearently i dont have that type of money , so i was wondering how it is to drive around with a bent axle what are some stuff i will expect to see? thanks.

yes you will expect stuff, vibrations, dont drive around with a bent axle, one from a local junkyard shouldnt be more than 30 dollars.

does it mean i gotta tear my rear end apart to replace it? would it be easier to go to the junk yard and get a whole new rear end and slap that on?

no you dont have to tear the rear down, just buy the axle its very easy

its actually not that hard at all. just get the axle, drop the diff off the subframe, remove bent axle, insert strait one, put diff back into subframe. thats kinda vauge i know but when u get under there and look at it its actually that simple, shouldnt take more then 2 hours if its your first time taking crap off the rear end if u have decent tools.

why do i need to drop the differential off the subframe? isnt the axle like behind the brakes/ hub ?? sorry for being a noob

are you from p town as in pomona? If I mite be able to help you out. Both axles connect to teh diff so once hte diff is out, you can change your axles. I think there are 6 bolts per axle.

no i am in portland, oregon .... so i need to remove the whole rear end off the body and then crack open the differential and remove the axle?

Nope one end of the axle is bolted up to the diff. The other end has a pin and nut holding it through the hub(by where the brakes are at). NO need to open up the diff but you do need to drop the diff.

no dude.... the axle is bolted onto the diff, what you have to do is take the drive line off the diff and unbolt the axle from the diff. On the tire side off the hub take out the pin that holds the axle onto the car, you'll need a size 36mm socket to take the axle bolt off. After that you have to angle the diff sideways and pop the axle out off the diff. Then slide the axle out. It's very easy, I've help a few friends do it to put in their LSD's. If you're still having problems let me know.

You're all wrong. You do NOT need to even touch the diff. Unbolt the 36mm nut at the hub side, then unbolt the six M10 bolts securing the axle to the diff. Compress the CV joints and slide the axle out of the output shaft, then slide the entire axle in front of the diff and out of the hub, then drop it out. Total of 10 minutes.

Yeah what he said. And to answer your original question, yes it's bad to drive around with a bent axle shaft. How'd you bend it anyways? Drive over your mother-in-law?

And when I was helping my friend put his axles back on if we compressed the joint the back end of the axle would pop off.

You apparently don't know what an axle is. I gave a nice writeup of how to remove it just a few posts up. If you're not going to bother to read the information you're given and continue to question yourself and others, don't bother posting. It's that simple. If you'd like to continue then read, absorb what you read, and use it to your advantage.

Dood this isn't a Ford F-150..... it's an import car.
The entire axle is the assembly itself. Follow R240NA's instructions, it's really a simple job. You'll want to smack yourself in the taint for being so difficult once you see how easy it really is.

The only way this would happen would be if you didn't hold the inside end to the diff with the mounting bolts... Slide it up in there, inside first, and loosely bolt it in place. Then slide up the outside end and compress the joint to fit it through the hub. If it comes apart when you try to do this its broken. REPLACE!!
