I have a couple kae blocks laying around and it got me thinking...what is the difference between the E and the DE blocks? In other words, could I get a KAE block bored and rebuild it as a DE?

The DE blocks are equipped with oil squirters also, as the KAE are not. But can be installed.

A) Wouldn't work
or
B) would be a royal pain in the ass...

i think what he's getting at is that there's actually about the same (if not more) performance parts for the sohc as there is for the dohc.
