so my check engine light went on during smog check but as I drove home it went off. obviously it didnt pass smog. but what is the deal? did the code got stored in the ecu or no? i check the code it 55.

Yes. The ECU now has an unready code stored in it. You need to drive the car through either 30 cycles or follow the FSM's procedure of clearing an unready code.
