ok, so i have recently given up on selling a few items local (oem metal fenders, front bumper, etc. i have never sold anything of this size before. what methods of shipment do you suggest?
what is the average cost of shipping items like this?
and how do you suggest i package these since i have no boxes near the size to accomodate these items.
thanks for any info or tips.

As far as shipping, DHL is awesome, they come pick it up from you for a small charge and overall cost is lower than UPS. Box... you're on your own. For some reason everytime I go with DHL I get charged alot less than what the online estimate is.

I personally hate DHL... I have always used FedEx... but to each his own.
Boxes... find a Matress shop and they should sell or give you the boxes... you can custom size the boxes for what your shipping.
Fenders can be shipped Ground if packaged correctly and the box is small enough... usually about $80ish.
Bumpers have to go Freight... some people do ship GreyHound for really cheep... I dont do GreyHound so not sure of cost and no real tracking or verification... Freight is normally about $150+. You can leave this up to the buyer to arrange if they like also.
Bubble wrap everything...

their are some places that do custom boxes also. i used this when i shipped a bumper, spoiler and a few other large items to florida, was a little less expensive then i thought. but i had the buyer pay for the custom box, because, well he wanted it.
definatly bubble wrap everything

DHL always shipped us stuff broken, especially aero. They suck at that.
You could try BAX Global, they seem to do ok.
Just make sure you PACK IT WELL. Shipping is like paint, prep is everything.

+1 to DHL being complete shit
look up box shops in the yellow pages... you will be suprised how much stuff some of them have that can help insure you good shipment of products such as fenders.
nissan send us fenders wrapped by two boxes to create the L design then wrapped the rest with bubble and the stuff always came in good condition. What do they use? Fedex for east coast along with some UPS.

Shipping metal hood and bumper through UPS, FedEx or DHL are going to be very very expensive. I shipped out a pair of sideskirts couple of months ago, and it cost me $80 from UPS.
I think Yellow Freight might be cheaper, but probably not as fast as those big names carrier.

Fedex for small packages is definitely good
Fedex for LARGE packages... sucks ASS. When I buy large equipment (tables, lab equipment) for my company, Fedex usually dents the metal and stuff. Not a good idea IMO

We never use Fedex for large items (like HUGE items) cause it just costs too damn much.
They kick ass for our normal stuff though.
Better than UPS.

I ship a ton of shit, here's my thoughts.
FedEx costs less than UPS but is twice the hassle, any Kinko's will do FedEx shipping but the paperwork is fucking murder.
what I choose to do is use Office Depot (they ship UPS) and type it all up on my own, I have their password and fudge the numbers a little by cutting a few inches off each side of the box and the weight if need be, comes out less and it's cake versus FedEx's thirty pages or handwritten bullshit.
DHL is even less but they're certain to trash whatever you're shipping.
Whatever it is, build your own box, I've used motor oil boxes to build a box for a fender before, just pack it tight and insure the fuck out of it if it's something fragile. And make certain they charge for the insurance and you have a record of it so when it comes back destroyed you're covered on your end.
I'll chime in since I work at UPS.
Wrap the bumper in bubble wrap and slap on the printed (not handwrtten) shipping label (make sure theres an extra invoice/label inside the bubble wrap incase the one outside comes off). Its easier to handle it like that than in a box. And when its being handled in the building, boxes wont be placed on top of it. It'll most likely be on top of the box pile.
If you ship it in a box, pack the crap out of it. It may end up at the bottom of the box pile in a trailer, and needs to support weight. You can probally find a box large enough at a body shop or a dealership.
DON'T go through the UPS Store and pack your own stuff. Find the location of your nearest UPS hub, and take it to the customer counter. Get Insurance too.

I've been trying to hit you up. If you have the passenger side fender...I'll take it. Shit...maybe I'll buy both sides if they are in good condition. I'am also looking for good condition headlights. Hit me up!

I use to work at FedEx. I use to see people throw shit around all the time, so definately pack it good. That goes for all shipping companies.
As for DHL, I like shipping thru them because they pick stuff up straight from ur house for a lil extra, very usefull if shipping large items.
Just get all the measurements of the final box and call or even search online for quotes on shipping.

^Agreed. The UPS Store people are morons and they upcharge like hell on all services, making it over double what it should cost. Several years before I knew any better I shipped a pair of calipers and hubs to WA state, they hit me for $147. Regular Ground services shouldn't have been any more than $35 across Country.

I had a sunny gt-s noseclip shipped to me by greyhound back when I had a b13 se-r (bumper, support, headlights, corners, fogs, grill). It was ~$20, and made it here in less than a week from socal. Shipper wrapped it all with bubble wrap, taped the hell out of it, and then used a length of rope to make a handle. Only problem is you have to go pick it up from your local bus station.
DHL is sick, they only go by weight, not size!!

my opinion, since I know a little about it.
bumpers - freight. OLD DOMINION is good. Central Freight is good. Bullet Freight is good.
Hood - I will never use BAX again. They break so much stuff. Use any of those same freight companies i listed above.
fenders should fit in UPS oversize 3. I kinda don't like UPS, but they havent been breaking too much stuff lately, so my opinion is getting a little better.
and now I have lost interest in this thread...so... bye

FedEx broke a rear window I shipped out to Indiana. I packed the piss out of it, even walked on the box before it left. I still knew they'd somehow break it so I insured it for $600, they broke it and after filing a claim I got back $110. Turns out the idiot who invoiced it didn't note the additional insurance, I fought for three months and finally got it resolved and a check for $500 extra. In retrospect I'm glad I insured it, but I also should have paid more attention to the receipt. I don't use them now at all unless it's something cheap that's not breakable, and the only reason I do is the Kinko's stores are open all night which is damn convenient.

BAX Global delivered my Seibon hood & did a great job. DHL was SUBSTANTIALLY cheaper than UPS for the shipping rate on my roll cage. Like 1/3 the price...
