There is a high-pitched whining sort of noise coming from my engine (S13 KA twincam) when it is idle. When I engage the clutch it goes away. I don't know what else information I can give since I really can't figure out where in the engine bay it's coming from.
Any ideas on what it could be?

Does it cause problems when it does this?
(Mine does it occasionally)
thanks in advance

Throwout bearing.
i thought it was pilot bearing that makes noise at idle, and TO when you engage.
either way, if its either of them, you're best to replace both bearings and get a new clutch

A new clutch usally comes with a new throwout and pilot bearing. If you need help getting a good price on a clutch PM me.

It's pilot.
If you're too lazy to fix it tell people it's your turbo.

My pilot bearing and throwout bearings are both on the way out, and have been since I put in my most recent redtop. Everyone thinks my car has "straight cut rally gears" or is supercharged lol. Scares the shit out of Evo and STI drivers.
Wait till you're replacing the clutch, and then replace both bearings. Some clutch kits come with both, some with only a throwout bearing, just make sure you're gettin both somehow.

Well the confusion is.. does he mean engage the clutch as in let off the pedal (clutch has engaged transmission) or engage the clutch pedal (step on the pedal).
When you have the clutch pushed down and it makes noise, its throw out bearing.
When it makes noise when you're off the pedal, its the input shaft bearing (inside the transmission.)
If its the second, just buy a new tranny. Unless you're comfortable taking yours apart at the housings.

Sorry for the confusion. Engaged as in stepping on the pedal. So it only makes the noise when I am off the pedal. Thanks.

noise when you're off the pedal is input shaft bearing. Inside the transmission.
