hey guys, im installing a buddy club spec II on my s14, but i ran into a problem, not with the exhaust, but my dad. the two bolts that attach to the cat are stuck on there super tight. so i put some penetrating oil and them and let it soak but they still wont budge. I went to go get the blowtorch to heat them up and just screw em right out, BUT... my dad doesnt think its safe to use the torch underneath the car because its 'so' close to the gas tank. So what im asking is if you can please just post on here saying it is safe and why. But....if he actually is right (which i dont think he is) and it's unsafe, could you please give me some better alternatives on removing the bolts.
thanks alot!

2 bolts that attach to the cat is far from the tank..

just torch it..and stop working on your car with your dad

Its not safe.

Get some more leverage on the nuts/bolts and really hit it with a closed hammer fist or an actual hammer to break it.

Just make sure there is not so much lube on the head or edges of the nut/bolt in question you strip it.

Its ok if you work on it with your dad, you could take a shower with your dad. What else do you do with your dad.

just joshin just joshin lmao

And how is this Technical?

Do it anyways. I always live on the edge. Its rare that a car spontaneously explodes but if it does please post Pics!!! :mrmeph:

just get more leverage.......try a wrench then put that into the jack pole...for more leverage.

dont worry about heat
use a breaker bar
or a pipe on the end of a ratchet

something to get more leverage as guys above are saying

if it still doesnt break loose it should just flat out break

i personally use a 3.5 foot leg from a fischer price 3 in 1 table for pesky bolts. hasn't failed me yet

oh ok ill see what i can do, ive tried something like what s13gold said and that didnt work but i never tried anything as long as lilredstiffys high quality fisher price leg hahahah, thanks, ill try

Put some man muscle into it. Man up.

Go to the gym, lift some 25lbs free weights, and give it another try.

But really, use a breaker bar. I frequently use the pole that goes onto the 3ton floor jack, putting the end on the ratchet, and working it like a G.

And i listen to Michelle Branch while doing so. Soo Manly!

wtf
kid works with his dad
i wish i could
i love hanging out with my dad
maybe you guys are 'too cool' for that shit
or too young.
never midn them, man.

anyways, yeah
propane torch is fine, but not necessary
might get a new cat (or delete it)
or use more leverage as suggested.
other then that might have to cut them off and get new bolts. as a last option, imo

but yeah. its cool you work on the car w/ dad.

If there isnt enough room to get enough leverage (their should be) Put the ratchet on the bolt and jack up the handle part with a floor jack. Works like a charm.

just put an open end wrench on there. lay down. put your foot on the end of the wrench. push with leg. it works. legs are stronger than arms thats how i got my driveshaft and flywheel bolts off.

It's cool that your dad is helping you out. Just respect what he says and try another way of getting the bolts off. No use butting heads over something so small. If he's willing to help you out now, he'll help you in the future as long as you respect him.

Plan A
First try an open ended wrench or a ratchet.

Plan B
Then try an open ended wrench with another one of similar size hooked up to it to give you more leverage.

Plan C
Try a breaker bar.

Plan D
Try a breaker bar with a pipe over it to give you more leverage.

I'm sure you'll get it off if you try these things.

Orly? Yarly.

I put a shit-ton of PBlaster on the bitches, then got a wrench. Turned around so my head was out from under the car, and donkey-kicked the fucker. Works every time.

And yet you still can't break two bolts loose. Weak.

Just get mad at them... swear at them a bit.... (maybe throw on some Michelle Branch as suggested)... soak them in penetrating oil... and don't stop wrenching on them till they come out or break off.

That's how I, and almost everyone else I'm guessing, does it....

penetrating oil, heat, hit with hammer to help break loose the rust, then apply steady even force.

are you kidding me hahahaha lol alrite hea's one of my answer i had this a long time ago. cut the bolt and redrill it. another is use a power tool works but will strip the threads. use rust penetrater will definitly work than the other ones i told you. dotn use wd-40 doesnt work all it does is make the bolts less frictionless wont penetrate throught the bolt to get it.

:werd: my dad just happens to come home when im in desperate need of help. when ever im stuck on something, he has a solution. however, i am intimitaded by his vast knowledge it just makes me feel stupid. dont know why i should feel that way...

anywhoo. breaker bar. works wonders.

Aaron said it. I have no hangups with parents helping work on car. You'll be asking for that when the pass on or even when they aren't around.

Keep shooting the bolt with pb blaster. Then take a breaker bar to it. If for some reason you don't have a breaker bar available. Sometimes you can use the handle of the jack.

worst case the bolt breaks. Which is common since those bolts go through such extreme heat changes and weather environments.

Heres how i found out how to do it...
1. Get a wrench that matches the bolt
2. lay flat on the ground under your car and use the under body of the car as leverage for your arms to hold onto and push with your feet on the wrench to turn it. helped me alot when a bolt wouldnt come out.

I would go with Flyberts approach. I have RARELY ever had the two opened ended wrenches fail me. If not I usually use a 2-3 ft aluminum pipe and that NEVER fails me. Autozone sells them. They are in the exhaust section. Like $4.99.

Second note. I agree with Aaron. My dad is always there to help me. He has saved my ass on a few cars that had a deadline. +3 on its cool to have your dad.

Third note. I dont think your car will blow up with a torch. Shit, I smoke cigarettes while pumping gas. Never had anything happen and I have been smoking on 6yrs now. (Flame Suit On!) Haha. Knock On Wood.

All In All, Just grab two opened wrenchs or a breaker bar, and either break it loose or break it the fuck off. End of story. *a

hey guys, i got the exhaust in, thanks for all the tips, i just used the breaker bar with a pipe and it got the job done, the fitment is awesome, the only problem is a small amount of rubbing on the subframe, so i might just saw it off, but all the hangers lined up and everything, i used hose clamps just to keep it more secure, heres some pics for you, sorry there so bad, i can get some better ones if you want, if you want pics of anything specific just ask and id be more than happy to get them, i think im going to keep the silencer out just because i think it looks like poopy. plus it sounds better without it.
