I just installed the Hella E-code conversions on my Jeep Cherokee (uses same headlights as my s13), and the difference was incredible. Granted, the old headlights seemed to be dimmer than average, but with the new ones, the amount of light that hits the road is amazing. I took some pics, I'll post them tonight when I get home.

the raybrig housings are pretty good, too. one of my friends has them on his ae86. i'd go for the hella's, though, just because of price.

Make sure you get E-code housings...sharper cut off and better light on the road.

after buying these housings and new bulbs to fit them, do any modifications need to be done
to the factory wiring? (besides the obvious splicing in new plug)

particularly on s13, do any modifications have to be done to bump up power supply to the lights?
and where would one find a female plug for the new bulbs?

^^ h4 bulbs just plug into the stock harness. if you feel you need it, you can just buy a heavy duty harness and splice in. i think the OP is going for HID, though.

jrocslider - just checked on the raybrig housings. they're discontinued. oh well.

I got Hella H4 housings from Mike at clearcorners when he sold those. They are the E-code and they're a huge improvement. I actually am not running HID in those anymore. The light spread is much more even with the bulbs meant to go in there.

We had this conversation before. It went on with like 5 pages of argueing btw HIds and the cibies. I personally like the hids and im using Hella h4 housings with Hi-lo beam 8k bulbs.

Here's the pics I promised. In these pictures, I have replaced the passenger side headlight with the new Hella E-code lamp. The driver's-side headlight is still the old sealed-beam unit (Wagner brand). You can't really see the difference in the amount of light that actually falls on the road, due to a parking lot light directly over the car, but I assure you the difference is huge.

Sealed-beam unit only:

Hella E-code unit only:

Both:

A little bit closer:

Hella only:

As you can see, there is practically no difference between the Hella by itself and both headlights on. The Hella units are literally orders of magnitude better than the old sealed-beam units. Before, most of the time i couldn't even tell if my headlights were on, now the street is flooded with light, and the nice sharp cutoff keeps glare to a minimum.

I'll post these in the other thread as well.

Here's where i bought my Hella's. ->Link (http://www.rallylights.com/hella/200mm.asp)<- I just bought the standard bulbs, but there are lots of options for upgraded bulbs. Honestly, I wouldn't put in a drop-in HID kit. The HID bulbs do not produce light in the same place as H4 bulbs, so the reflector will not aim the light properly and you will have more glare. With these upgraded housings and some quality bulbs, there really is no need for HIDs.

The E-code conversions are technically not DOT legal. The 'Vision Plus' housings are DOT legal, but won't have as nice of a cutoff and will glare more. You can read more about it at the link I posted.
