Fuel Economy

I am just curious.  I have an 89 240sx SE FB.  I believe I am running a bit rich or I am just losing lots of gas due to my exhaust which I can hear some gas firing late.  Anyways.. I was just wondering what kind of city milage/kilometers you are getting on a full tank of gas.  I am running 89 octane and get about 300km(not sure of miles) on a full tank.

Anybody else get anything better?  It also seems that my gas guage falls really fast until about 1/4 tank left.. then it takes awhile to get from 1/4 to empty.

o2 sensor might help with the running rich,

intake, header, and exhaust. Also, a tune up would help depending on the miles of your car (new plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor).

I average 29 MPG- jumped up from 27 when I tuned things up a bit (plugs, air and fuel filters). I have a much more highway commute than most, though.

I have a 1991 stock with a 5 speed and 153,000 miles.
What I do when I fill up is reset the trip odometer and fill the tank as far as it will go. Then, about 5 days later I will fill up again and make a note of how much gas I have to put back in it until the pump shuts off automatically. Divide your miles by gallons. Then I reset the odometer and do it again.
Never use the gas guage, that is just a ball park estimate.
I get about 25 with the a/c on, 28 during winter.
I would so a tuneup, and get in the habit of doing that yearly.
Change your oil and top off all the fluids that need it. Change the cap and rotor, wires, plugs, fuel filter, and air filter. I would make a note of what your plugs and filter looked like too. Maybe your o2 sensor. www.pdm-racing.com sells those.

hehe thanks. &nbsp;I just had a tune-up done. &nbsp;New wires, dist cap, rotor, plugs. &nbsp;I had a new intake hose put in as well. &nbsp;I have noticed some increase since then.. but I still think I can improve. &nbsp;Thanks for all the suggestions! <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

Try the o2 sensor if things don't look up. It probably won't help, but the next two time you fill up, use a higher octane. Just see if it works or not. Shouldn't be that much more. Remember, these things don't the best mileage anywas. They are rathed at like 24 city, if I recall correctly. Now, most of these cars are 10 years old. Auto and 5 speed affect this too.

Ya thanks. I have a 5spd with 159000 kms (92k miles) on it. I will try some 91 octane next time I fill up.

Do you know how much a typical o2 sensor replacement with parts and labour costs? &nbsp;Can I do this myself?

If you gap your plugs a little wider this can help too. &nbsp;Say to like .043 &nbsp;(max suggested in FSM)
An ignition system will help your mileage as well.
-Pretty much anything that allows the engine to breath Easier, and burn fuel more efficiently will improve gas mileage. &nbsp;Of course for me, the problem is those things also increase Peak Horse power for the same reason. &nbsp;Increased Efficiency. &nbsp;I always end up driving harder b/c I have more power, and gas mileage goes down Rapidly when your at WOT all the time.

Also increase your Tire pressure. &nbsp;This will reduce rolling resistance.
