Hi,
I just got the 240 home from 6-7 weeks in the shop (ridiculous! from the 5sp swap. The good news is that it *works*. There are a few bugs - the convertible top doesnt go down anymore (ECU says car has to be in "park"), the shifter feels spongy (is this a common problem? what is it from? i drove my friends 95 and it felt a lot different).

But WOW! The car is so much faster. I got the headers and hi flow cat on too. When I got the car it was about 0-60 in 10 sec. I estimate now it's in the low 7s. Way quicker, but the gears are different than my MR2 so it will take some time getting used to.

Final note: Funny how a $200 transmission turns into a $2100 job. Oh well.

Let us know if some problems show up....I was thinking of the same swap....but if you're willing to shell out the extra money, have someone else check it out....(but thats just what I would do)

2100? wow.. thats crazy..

Is the convertible goverened by a different controller than the ECU? How do you plan to get the Convertible top to work?

find the little switch from the old shifter and just wire it together (I think itll work)

well 2100 including the headers which i needed a new gasket and like new holes cause everything was messed up down there, so minus 150 for that. so 1950 for the swap. i'll break it down maybe if anyone thinks it's a good idea i'll post it in the faq. ok problems - its a little funky downshifting into 1st or 2nd. it doesnt like it - i can tell its gonna grind from the vibrating so i just back off. other than that and the "spongy" feel, all's good.

Price Breakup:
1993 240sx Manual Transmission & ACT Clutch (turned out to be unusable) - $200 + $150 crate shipping (good deal turned out to be $225) = $350
Misc Transmission Parts (Shifter, Pedals, Bushings, Etc) - $100 + $30 shipping = $130
Drivetrain and Upper Clutch Hydraulic Dampner $150 + $25 shipping = $175
Mount, Bushing, Shift Knob & Boot, etc $85
Labor 20 hrs @ $60/hr = $1200
Misc Parts $50

So as you see I got pretty good deals on everything BUT labor... but I know he did a good job, he's a nice guy, this just wasn't his specialty. Oh well I'll keep you posted and hope to see some of ya soon.

Oh yah after today, the manual top really doesn't bother me, I'm thinking of removing the stuff maybe saving 25 lbs? Any convertible owners out there wanna help me out with anything?

I didn't take anything but an extra manual tranny ECU and that ACT clutch that has bent teeth... I figured the tranny wouldnt be worth my time for $20.

damn 2100.....thats a buttload of money but i guess the swap was worth it... i am still waiting on things so that i can do the swap.....i have a guy that set me up with all the parts but i am debating on whether or not i want to do it myself cause i dont wanna screw up my car but i dont want to spend 2100. also i am getting the speech from my parents that it is not worth it to swap out my tranny and put in a manual one.....they say that i shouldnt do it because problems will occur that i had never had before and such and its mostly that they dont want me to spend my money but thats my life story and i am bullshitting on your post sorry

well it sounds like the manual tranny is working good for you, props to you. this makes me want to do mine now......just have to win the parents over to my side

20 hours for that swap?! and the convertible doesnt work?!

i just swapped my own trans from auto to 5 spd on my sentra w/ sr20de not hard at all. took me less than 2 days maybe like 15 hours mostly. but as usual you want some cushion for your work so 20 hours doesnt seem so bad.

did they wire up everything like the nuetral safety switch or do you still start your car like an auto. i know i havent bothered wiring in my switch cause i've been to lazy. as for the convertible it should be park or nuetral that it should work in they both send the same signal.

*edit* ohh and i doubt you gained 3 seconds on your 0-60 i doubt the autos were that slow. in 1/4 time you may have a 1 second drop. i hope to get that also on my sentra. we'll see

yah the auto verts really are that slow. there's a list on some site that claims like 9.8 sec. i didnt mean 3 sec from just the tranny, but the tranny along with headers, cat, exhaust, intake, ignition, pulley, suspension. anyway. yah and the mechanic did wire the neutral safety switch. you cant put the top down in neutral because you couldnt put it down in neutral with the auto. it really doesnt bother me putting it down myself. 20 hrs which again was 2 hrs on the headers. oh yah and i have a problem the tranny doesnt like 2nd gear. i hope this is a small fixable problem but it might escalate into something really bad.

Still looks veeery unrealistic. Your car weighs around what s14s weigh and those run 8.3 0-60 stock. 1 second drop with those upgrades is kinda ulikely. Especially if you take in consideration that i/h/e kinda rob you of your low end..

hey, 5-speed 240s aren't slow at all sorry, don't read my post as bitching at you i was just stating my opinion. its alright man. if you ask anyone with a 240 vert they will tell you it is slower than a hatch or coupe auto. not only is it 200 lb heavier but also detuned. the bolt ons definately brought it back up, and the manual tranny took 50 lbs off.
