View Full Version : Lengthen shifter shaft or JDM bubble knob

I'm interested in getting some sort of extension for my shifter. I want to experiment with having the top of the knob closer to the steering wheel. This would only be a temporary setup during things like open track events.
Is there a place that sells extensions, or those JDM bubble knobs? I don't like the look of those, but I can see the advantages. I wonder if there are more subtle looking ones..I wouldn't want flashy pink, lol. Thanks.

i think a 6inch bubble know would be pretty sick if you get a short shifter with it
i had a 6inch shiftknob without short shifter ..just kinda makes the throw feel weird if youre holding it from the top..you can get used to it though
but yeah..its for sure its closer to the steering wheel..

I had a 4inch extension I got from Korea. I think it was about 4200won, so about $4.

I got the same one but with the bend in it to aim the shifter closer to me. I heart it
I'm pretty sure you could find something in Lowes in the plumbing section that would work as a thread on extension

^^ I don't know what you're talking about. Melbourne/Orlando area peeps love bubble knobs, especially the pink ones (I know of 2, I got one, friend got the other).

Irax are you talking about copper plumbing pipe? It might be weak and bend on you. Might want to go for something solid, or at least thicker/stiffer walls.

Sounds gay but the show "tuner Transformation" was making a "drifter shifter". Im not sure if they have started selling it yet but it is a short shifter with the extention built in so even with the shifter next to the wheel it has a very short shift. They were testing it at some USDrift events last year.

I'd watch out with the bubble knobs.
Another driver broke his in half at Just Drift event.
But if you're just daily driving like that dude with the Pimp Cane Cressida knob, then no worries.

+1 for no bubble shift knobs on the track. mine popped off in mid-drift. if you can find a really secure way of putting it then its ok

Yup, I'm thinking of getting rid of my C's and going with a B&M + long shifter shaft.
Thanks for the heads up on bubble knobs coming loose or breaking.

LOL. New siggy material right there.
I have a bubble knob (5 incher). It is nice for daily driving, but be warned that it makes any sloppiness in your shifter (especially if its stock) way more apparent.

86.5-88 S12 Shifter (longer and drop in), HKS shift springs in trans, new plastic shifter bushing, Nismo Cylinder Knob. I love the balance and throw, all short shifter always feel like they want to pop out of gear on me.

Why do you feel the need to let all of zilvia know about your distaste for bubble shifters in a thread about people who do like them?

i wouldnt be talkin about avatars buddy^^^^^^^^^
but anyway i dislikem the the op says it himself he doesnt like it..its my opinion so i say nay on the DONG knobs..
ive been thinking about using the shifter from my 93 hardbody truck, put the shift lever into a shortshifter base/mount and see how it works. youd have to straighten out the lever first though

Nobody said anything about putting a DONG, aka dildo, on their shifter.
I think somebody did do that once, but either they were gay themselves or it was a chic or something, so it didn't matter.
We're talking about bubble knobs, not DONGs for knobs.
This kinda reminds me of the "anti stretch nazis" coming into the stretch and wheel fitment threads and talking shit about stretching tires and telling everyone how stupid it is or whatever, and nobody cared.

I do own one.
I don't give a flying fuck if you think it's gay or not.
What I do give a fuck about is you trying to tell people how people should or shouldn't run a shift knob of their choice because you're homophobic, and putting people down because of your homophobia.

I'm not into the dildo shift knob either. It's just strange to me to go into a thread about something just to tell the world of your opinion on the object that is being discussed ITT.

i have an extension.
i love it.
i have an r32 shifter which is basically the same as the nismo one.
so it feels kinda wierd/sloppy at times.
i am looking forward to getting a short throw shifter which should feel awesome.

IMO if you arent used to a longer shifter, or your using a ghetto rigged up one, then its not worth it. I'd rather reach 8 inches farther than miss a shift mid drift. the whole point of the shifter being closer to the wheel is so you can get your hand back on the wheel ASAP. However if you miss the shift, or are searching for gears, then you have created an entirely new problem, not helped a minor one.
Plus if your just extending the stock shifter then your throw up top will be even longer, probably awkward, and not very quick in between gears-thus defeating the purpose.
I'm keeping my B&M w/ nismo knob just like it is. Same goes with hydro ebrake, leaving it in the OEM position, its the most comfortable, and my body movements naturally go there from it being there all the years i've ever driven. my 2c

I had a bubble knob and it sucked.
On Vortex someone had a shifter so long that it practically reached the roof, that's much cooler.

If i were to make a shifter extension, how would i do it?
The only thing my drunk ass can think of is buying a rod that is bigger than the thread size, drilling and tapping m10x1.25 threads on both ends, and then putting a stud in one end.

pull the sword out a little and it would be in unlock mode, and sheath the sword back and it would go in locking position
