View Full Version : Might be forced to sell off my S14 :(

I never thought that I was getting myself into this much of a mess!  I bought my S14 back in May and basically fully rebuilt it with a lot of time and effort.  I now further research the salvage laws in NY & MA (my only two options for registration) only to find that they are so so much more harsh than just about every other adjacent state!

I kept all of my receipts, but I am missing about two receipts from a past owner who began the repairs.  I haven't been able to locate identification labels for those two parts.  Next problem, I replaced my steering wheel with a Momo unit.  I was not intending to replace the airbags since I had not thought it would be a problem.  It seems that this will be a big problem too.  I wish I had lived in a different state where I would surely pass a salvage inspection with no worries.  This is becoming way too big a hassle for me.

I really don't know what to do now... any suggestions?

If  it's too much work, sell the car to someone out of state, then use the money to buy another one, bite the bullet on any money lost. Try to figure which would be the best route to take. Sell and buy another, or fix the current one. tough.

I figure I can sell it and not lose a significant amount of money because I did a good job of sourcing parts for good prices.  I'll probably lose a little chunk of cash though.  It's too bad, it only has 23k miles, and I had big plans for the car.  Maybe I'll be able to figure something out... hmm I don't know.

Well, if it not too much money  you'll lose, you might want to take that route. Would it cost you more to pass salvage inspection or to sell and buy ?

Buying a "new" set of airbags is basically the kicker for me.  I think that in doing that I'd lose more money than I'd lose by selling it.  (Since I already bought the Momo steering wheel and have no desire of replacing the airbags)  And then there's the hassle of officializing the few parts I have that don't have identification.  At this point, I still can't even locate the insurance appraiser's report which I think is also needed.  I really don't think I have an option but to register it in a different state somehow or to sell it to someone who can.

My best option would be to find a way to register it in VT where it's damn easy to get by.  But then I can't get insurance because I don't live there - unless I lie.

well this may work.....if you register it in VT, then bring it back to NY, couldnt you re-register it....or would you still need a salvage title in NY too....

That's a good idea, I thought about that a little.  I might look into that, if a title is rebuilt in one state - I figure it should transfer to another with out a fuss.  hmm...
