 I just picked up a new Canon Rebel XTi and I've been experimenting around with it. I love it! I am kinda familar with Canon products, I use to have a Powershot A40 back in the day. Now I'd like to get more serious and take interesting pictures.

I've been toying around with low light and usuing the Manual settings... Some of the pics are turning out interesting.

Whats a lense that you'd recommend? I'd like to get a nice Sigma lense, I just don't know whichs to look at. (I have a 18-55mm).

what kind of lense are you looking for? im not familar with canons, but i can help you out with lens types. what are you gonna be shooting most?

sigma makes a nice wide angle 10-22mm.
it seems like everyone carries a 50mm prime lense.

but it all depends what you are going to need and such. but i do reccomment you get a circular polarizer filter.

I was planning on picking one of those cameras up in the coming weeks. How do you like the controls? I was playing with one at Best Buy and it seemed pretty easy to use. Check out this website for basic info. on lenses.

That's hardly one of Skizzlers best pics.

Here's just a tip of the iceberg:

IS is a saving grace.

The best advice I can give is this:
Do not skimp on your lenses.

If you take photography seriously, spend the money to get the good stuff.
Canon's L lenses are where it's at.

Get a 50mm f/1.8 (the plastic fantastic). Experiment and learn how to shoot with limited DOF. Once you're a pro with it, upgrade to the f/1.4 or the f/1.2L

Spend more money on lenses than on accessories for the body.
Your lenses are for life. Your body will become outmoded within 5 years.

Get an external flash and a diffuser. No more red-eye and you can bounce flash to reduce shadowing.

Invest in an extra battery (at least one) and extra memory. You never want to be without juice or space.

DO NOT EVER TOUCH YOUR SENSOR. WITH ANYTHING.

Lenses can sometimes be badly calibrated. If your shots with it are coming out soft, think about sending your body and lenses to Canon for calibration.

As far as purchase order, it's entirely dependent upon your own needs.
If you're just using it for weekend warrior shooting, stock lens plus cheap telephoto will do you fine.

For amateurs:
The 50mm in question (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=Search&A=details&Q=&sku=12142&is=USA&addedTroughType=search)
70-300mm IS (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=Search&A=details&Q=&sku=397663&is=USA&addedTroughType=search)
430EX flash (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=Search&A=details&Q=&sku=397664&is=USA&addedTroughType=search)

If photography is something you'll be doing for money or as a serious hobby,
by the time you're outshooting those lenses, you'll know what you need most.

For me, I need:
70-200 f/2.8 IS (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=Search&A=details&Q=&sku=234444&is=USA&addedTroughType=search)
24-70 f/2.8 (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=Search&A=details&Q=&sku=264304&is=USA&addedTroughType=search)
1.4x extender (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=Search&A=details&Q=&sku=220456&is=USA&addedTroughType=search)

And one day when I'm minting my own money:
300mm f/2.8 IS (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=Search&A=details&Q=&sku=183202&is=USA&addedTroughType=search)

When this kid came in to get a new clutch put in, I decided to go up to the second level and snap this shot:

I like the shots jspek took, Skylar also has some talent! I was reading up about the IS lenses from Canon, I'd like to pick one of those up...

I'm thinking about taking more pictures on the track around here in the Northwest. So action shots / stills would be great. I want more content for my sites and hopefully take pics for some buddys and piece together a portfolio kinda like Larry Chen's, simple and straight forward.

I love all the options on the XTi, I've been tinkering around with low light. Today its sunny, so I should run around and take some more pics before it gets to dark. ^_^

I shoot B&W film with an old school Pentax K-mount, and develop/print in my home darkroom, but any type of photography can be tons of fun. Rock the kit lens for a while until you really feel restricted by it, as decent glass for new cameras isn't cheap! Maybe try renting some lenses for starters and try a few to see what you really would like to have in your collection before you drop the big bucks!

A few shots I took a while back. I haven't had the time to scan any of my automotive prints yet.
