door speaker fitment

I just recently finished installing 6.5s in my s13 doors (F'ing Awesome!) and i was just wondering if anyone used those speaker baffles or "speaker hats" that they sell on like crutchfield and stuff to protect them from water? I interested in what people have to say as far as any issues they ran into with the window maybe hitting them when they come down. I know that they are foam and easily collapse, but do you think that the window could damage the baffle itself? (if these didnt work well because of issues witht the window, what were some other things that you gys used to enclose/protect the back of the speaker?

How did you get the 6.5 to fit? I was going to put 6.5" components, but I figured it would be too difficult to install them in the 4x6 speaker slot

After i took off my old mouting bracket i copied the shape left on the door to a piece of paper, then cut that out, and traced around it on a 1/4" piece of plexi glass. I marked where the old screws went so that it would line up perfectly. cut a hole large enough for the 6.5 magnet, then screwed the speaker into the plexi glass. Then screwed the new bracket onto the door. I also went to a local shop a found a foam baffle to protect the speaker from any water damage. That i stuck to the back sound of the new template.

Theres a handful of forums that explain the process with pictures and even offer the templates for the new bracket so you dont have to trace your own.

It wasnt that hard and im very pleased with the sound.

Is there a much improved difference in sound? I have 4x6 Infinity Kappa speakers that sound nicely, but the mid range bass from them sounds like shiat! Luckily I have a sub to cover that, but still lol.

I noticed a pretty great difference in sound...but i was coming from old busted 4x6's that wouldnt work unless i put something between the cone and the tweeter part cause they were 2-way's.

btw, i dont know anything about plexiglass or plywood or whatever...i just made my mounts out of some pretty sturdy cardboard i had sigging around.

That fit like ass.

Fronts fit fine, I wouldnt even bother with the rear.

Unless your interior is already gutted, then its not so bad to pull out the trays, cut them, cut the speaker adapter itself, drill new holes in the adapter depending on which speakers you have, etc etc

well i bought some 250 watt (i think) pioneer 3 ways and its a hell of alot better than my busted 4x6's. i have some older pioneer 6x9's in the trunk that are both individually boxed that a friend gave me years back and my car hits real nice now... Perfect actually, until i get a sub and an amp.

But yeah, has anyone upgraded their door speakers and placed a foam baffle or something similar on the back of the speaker to protect it from water? And what issues did you notice with the window and howd you resolve it?

I was gonna pickup some dynamat speaker protectors for mine, because my friend can get them real cheap. I wouldnt imagine there would be any problem with them. They are flimsy enough that if the door glass were to hit them it would just fold and not break, etc.

There is no issue with the window unless they're 3" deep, which is doubtful. A better solution though is to make a plastic half moon shaped baffle and shield the top of the speaker, it's more sturdy and won't rot or deform like foam will.

my baffles that i bought were actually pretty deep. I stuck them to the back of my template and hope that when the window goes down that it still stays glued well enough to the template that it doesnt break off or anything. I shouldve made some smaller ones, oh well.

soooooo after a couple weeks of my new speakers working perfectly.... last night out of no where all sound in my car stopped. My headunit is still working exactly as normal, but theres no sound coming from my door speakers or my 6x9s in the back??? Did i randomly blow a fuse somehow from my headunit to my speakers? Im not really sure as to where i should look first. I have a pioneer premier deh6400 headunit and pioneer 6.5s and 6x9s for how little that helps...

Any suggestions on where to look...once it stops pouring down rain and i can check.

Check your grounds, fuses and make sure that no water got into the door and possibly shorted out the circuit via the speakers.

So your headunit works? Are the 6x9s powered by an external amp or just the one in the headunit?

Floating ground amplifiers will usually cut the load if a speaker is grounded out, so check the connections at the speakers and make sure nothing is touching metal.

thanks for all the info guys.... Yeah all my speakers are running off of my headunit. Im gonna double check the wires that i taped off after i bypassed the factory amps (from my 4x6's) and make sure that no water got to them or anything. Im gonna check my grounds and fuses tomorrow.

...The headunit still functions exactly as it normally would, but the fact that all my speakers went outta the blue, threw me off.

They were three way 6.5s, and i didnt have to deal with any components/crossovers.

Im still trying to figure out where something shorted out or if i blew a fuse, or if something in my headunit just stopped working i dunno....

so last night out of nowhere i turned my headunit back on and it all started working again? Apparently i didnt short anything out and it must have just been a loose wire that...i dunno, magically got itself back into place. Why else could all of my speakers stopped working and then....outta nowhere they come back?

I have the Ebay adapter plates in the front of an S13. They lined up really well. I was impressed for el cheapo stuff from Ebay.

I used the flattest 6.5" speakers I could find. They ended up being Sony Xplode. I also used the 6.5" thin baffles from Crutchfield. They fit great. No clearance issues on the manual windows.

Sound quality is very good for what it is. I'm running just 2 speakers and a headunit. No amps no subs no rear speakers.
