There's already a thread for dashboards for the exact same purpose of showing gauge setups and such.

Ugh, now I see why admins hate all these repeated threads.

It would have been if he'd looked into alternative materials. I like the idea so I think I'm going to do something similar (with different fabric) when I start on this shell.

To the OP: You might want to look through this thread - http://www.zilvia.net/f/showthread.php?t=93275&highlight=interior - not too much fully custom stuff but it's an idea.

Actually there are 2 threads 1.Is about where people put gauges 2. A guy fiberglassed his dash and didn't even finish posting up his guide. Neither help him and you didn't even link to them. Delete your post please.

I am also interested in fiberglassing, I got some quotes locally and what I wanted was about $1000 for a shop to do it. Safc Neo + blitz turbo timer and boost controller molded into the dash with it color matched to the car.

I like the suede but not the way the carbon is set-up. I hear a lot about when doing fabric, you get a lot of runs. I might start looking into doing a suede dash its growing on me.

Color matched to the car? You're kidding I hope. Not only will the glare blind you and anyone driving nearby, but it will also be the gheyest thing you can do besides eating a penis just for fun.

Mine is just stock and wrapped... and yah don't color match as in paint the dash the same color as the exterior, it would produce a ton of glare that would obstruct your view for sure. Unless you were of course building one of those trailer queen cars. But everyone has their own taste I guess.

Damn didn't expect questions LOL...

Yes, it's suede. I didn't do the work myself a great guy by the name of Mike here in San Jose did the work for me out of his garage! It took about 4-5 yards to do I believe. I do know however that the material is easy to get and reasonably priced at local industrial yardage shops (but it's a bit more expensive if you don't have a reseller permit etc).

Sorry I'm not much help on the 'how to'.

My friend covered his dash and door panels in suede. He bought it at Hobby Lobby, it's pretty cheap, and looks nice. He used some kind of a fabric glue to attach it. Make sure to press it on quite firmly, otherwise bubbles will start forming in it.

^ as of now its done. I'm looking to spend as little money as possible and get it on the track asap. In the future I will do it better yes. As for the gauge cluster, it will be stock surround with stock buttons, probably working different things, or not at all, just looks nicer, and a custom mounting plate for the aim sports gauge. should be nice, but I'm more into going right now than showing.

Yea, I have a cracked to hell dash that is cut to go around the cage in my project car, was thinking about fiberglassing it and painting it a semi-flat black or something. I am not sure if I can make micro suede look good going around the curves of the dash, and it would cost to much to have it professionally done for the car it's going in, lol.

well, its not really my cup of tea, but a friend of mine figured out a good way of making a fiberglass like dash and it truly does look amazing...

see, fiberglass can get thick, and once you add that thickness the dash gets harder to fit like the day it was installed.

so what he did, was, would spray the dash with primer for a few coats, to fill in the lines/cracks (whatever you wan to call that grainy finish) and keep sanding it until the primer mad filled the cracks etc and after he sanded and sanded, it looked like a smooth primered piece of metal/bosywork... then he just painted it,....

and bam!!! it went back in without any fitment issues

cf glare is no different than a black fiberglass dash glare. lame.

plus, there is like 50 different patterns to that cf interior, thick ass weave on the console, off the shelf kit weave pattern for the trim stuffs, and the dash itself is another weave pattern. it would be nice if it was all dry carbon, even the door panels. all of that is overlay, so its only adding weight.

plus automatic, nismo stickers, and dvd screen for negative points!

There are a lot of defects in the dash that this photo doesn't show well, but it is exactly what I wanted it to be (the same shape as factory but very light at under 3 lbs). I have a friend who does a lot of vacuum bagging and might give the mold to him to make a very good piece. The vacuum bag kept piercing itself on the back of the mold when I made it. I didn't really have much experience with composites when I made this (respect to people who do this as a career). I'm sure technology makes it easier today at the upper levels but wet layup is very frustrating and time consuming.

So back to the suede covering....

What is the process? Besides cleaning do you have to prep the surface at all? What type of glue?

It seems like it would have to all be one peice making it quite hard to go around the curves cleanly. I wonder if you could do the glue in sections. Put the glue down on 1/3 of the dash, wait until it dries so that you can easily keep the next 1/3 tight. Now sure if that would work or not since I have no experience with this kind of crap.

I did R&D for the Millitary (Composite materials) and learning to vacuum bag was by far the coolest trick. It takes time to learn the tricks to get a perfect bag. We also did double sided molds. Basic Vacuum molding (bagging) is still being used... no huge technology jump in this field yet.

To be honest... VIS does better work then what comes out of the Millitary Contracts.
