Hello, i just wanted to see what people's opinions are on what i am bout to do. First of all , i only know a average amount about engines and stuff. I would like to do a SR20 swap but i want to do it myself because i don't have that much money to pay someone else to do it. Here is my plan:
Buy a cheap 240sx with a near non running / non running engine and tow it home. Then i will practice on taking the stock motor out, and putting everything back in again just to get a feel of what swapping is like. I read that SR20 swaps are pretty straight forward so do you guys think that i should give this a go? Any suggestions, hints, or even stories about how you learned will be great. Thanks!

Do it.
Make some friends who've done it before.
Or find someone who's doing it who'll let you watch.
My first motor swap was purely by change.
Be humble.
Be patient.
Know you're gonna break shit.
Read directions.
Get someone to overview your work.

I did a RB25 swap by reasearching (do allot of that) then get some oh shit backup people that you can call on, then just do it and give yourself plenty of time.
did i mention reasearch and know every step and part that you will need. and have everything ahead of time?
there is allot of SR info out there, look into if before committing.

Having everything ahead of time is an important step. It is going to make you really mad, when you have to run to the store 12 times or order something. You will punch yourself in the face. I wanted to.

No, but that's only because I can't get behind the idea of giving someone money for what you can figure out for yourself.

You dont need to practice a swap. Just go for it. If you run into any problems, search. There is plenty of info around and almost every problem u can run into have been posted.

If you really have to, run to your nearest book store and pick up the first issue of Project Car Magazine if its still out on the racks. Has a step by step guide to installing an SR into a 240sx.

Not a difficult thing to do as long as you're not scared of turning wrenches and getting your knuckles bruised.
Best advice given was to become friends with a few people that've done it before. Beer works best. Cake after that.

Best advice given was to become friends with a few people that've done it before, and get annoyed with how long it's taking you to do it so they jump in there and finish everything before you get done saying "wtf?". Beer works best. Cake after that.
There, fixed :bigok:
Make sure you have another car incase you get held up for a long time. I had wiring issues and ended up riding the bus for a couple weeks. Also make sure you have atleast a couple hundred dollars more than you think you'll need for the swap.

Well i am currently a junior in high school, and my school is pretty close to me and i am living without a car right now anyways so a hold up of things wouldnt make that big of a deal. But thanks a lot guys, it gave me more confidence into dealing with engine swaps. So you guys suggest me to not waste the time to put the KA back in for practice, instead just go straight for the SR?

as a junior in high school, you should be focused on your studies and not on swapping motors...
if you are a genius or don't plan on going to college, swap in a fresh KA...
KA for life!
just add boost.
blow the motor, get another one and repeat.

Find friends whos done any kind of motor swaps before. Why? Because they prolly have all the tools youll need to do the swap (specially an engine hoist)

I say figure in an extra 10% cash or at least $400 as just in case funds, if you don't sue them, be happy. I dropped and extra $1000 on coolent issues on my swap.
but i would suggest having a few friends to help too, it makes it easier, and helps to have another person looking at a problem.
