Here's my new setup. White LED's in the cluster. I painted the needles red with a transparent paint. There is also a white led in the autometer gauge...

Looks great. As most people note the white comes out slightly blue. What brand LED did you use?

You used the "disperse" type LED right? Looks good, man.

Looks nice. There's a thread for gauge cluster lights though.

There is a thread for everything dude, seems like you've been around enough to know that. You know just as well as I do, no one pays attention to those threads, and I wanted people to see this. But thanks for the compliment.

That's the color I was going for but now that I see it, it looks really bright and distracting. How's driving with it at night?

I used the wide angle LED's from superbrightleds and with the blue backing on the guages it came out that "icy blue" as people call it. I don't know if I'd really call it purple...When you first see it it looks white but after a while you start to notice the blue tint. Did you find a way to get the blue off or are those just like LED's with the power of a small star lol? Anyways I like the way it turned out for me, it's really easy on the eyes. I'm contemplating trying blue like you did in that other thread, well I'm pretty sure it was you too lazy to look haha. But the super white looks awesome, and you got your redline back! haha

Camera phone pics at night don't really do it justice (makes it look really blue) but...

Ok so I went and looked and it's not the same. Same digital HUD and the guy said he was going white next which is why I thought it was you.

Nice Job!

A question though - Does the Gauge Cluster retain the dimming ability?

"blue condoms pulled off"

I did it and it's not nearly as orange as the pic shows, but it is easier on the eyes than white.

Yeah, you can still dim it with LED's installed.

I had mine with the regular bulbs with the blue condoms pulled off, and like Matt89 said, the pics make them look more orange than they actually were.

whatever you do, i dont recommend using blue leds or bulbs. I tried it, looked at it for a second, and couldnt make out anything. Red or amber all the way. Oh yea, by the way, i colored the bulbs alittle with a dying red permanent marker. That is why they are more orange. I did it to my buddies cluster and used a fresh marker and his is red.

It'll fade to orange eventually.

Anyone tried getting it to be green? like Greddy gauges? I've been wanting to do that

the red 194 bulbs from walmart work GREAT...i had pics but i lost them, the amber ones look really nice too

Yeah, i pulled off the 'blue condoms' a while ago, forgot i did it till i saw this thread again.

i suggest changing the white... eye fatigue is no joke if you're driving at night for a really long time. instead of the transparent paint on the needle, you can put a red LED in the hole where the driving shaft goes from the motor to the needle (inside the guage)

I can tell you my DD neon has green gauges from the factory, more teal, but anyway its really hard on the eyes when you are doing a long drive at night. I wouldn't suggest it.

My WRX comes stock with green backlighting and it is very easy on the eyes, even after long drives at night, although im sure there is a "slight" difference in the quality of gauges between Subaru and Dodge. :keke:

wow, I haven't checked this thread in days and it's taken off, lol. The paint that I used is from a local hobby shop. It's called Transparent cherry red. It's in a spray can. So I took a few white pieces of computer paper, put them on top of eachother. Sprayed the paint on the paper, and painted the needles with a brush.

Now, for the brightness.... My Digi cam has like 20 different modes to choose from. Each mode has a different shooting environment which I'm sure you all know. The one I chose to take the pics of the gauges is called "candle light portrait". So, the gauges look A LOT brighter in the pic than they actually are. They ARE easy on the eyes. I've already done the amber gauge thing. I really liked it, I just wanted to try something new. Here's some pics of the amber setup with red needles...

I chose to go with white because I personally think the color flows better with the HUD. I've seen amber with HUD, and it looked horriable.

the OP's pictures are false. It's not really that bright in person. I've tried WHITE LED on my gauge cluster, it's too dim and it's more purple than white.
If you exif the pictures posted by the OP, you'll see that the exposure time is 1.6 sec.

No pics, but i decided to replace my stock bulbs with some LG ones, just regular #194 12v, and they are oh so much brighter than my old bulbs. Worth the 6 bucks IMO. No led's for me.
