View Full Version : Can't figure this clutch/throughout bearing problem out!

I have a redtop sr in a 95 chassis and I have a weird problem. When I am backin out of a parking spot and I let the clutch out about half way, then have to press it back in, it starts to grind as if the car is like halfway out of gear. Its hard to explain but another example is if I am in traffic and I have to creep up some but not enough to let the clutch out all the way, then when I press it back in the car will do this noise. I have replaced the entire gear section of the tranny, the clutch slave, and inspected the throughout bearing and sleeve and they look fine, no imperfections. So I just got my tranny in and I've driven it for a few days and it has been fine, then today, it just did it again after all the damn work I did to swap out the entire tranny. If anyone can give me advice on where to start, it would be great. Also, it only seems to do it after the car is warmed up so I got the idea about something with the throughout bearing might be binding when it gets warm and expands. Your ideas are appreciated and sorry this is so long.

The throughout bearing is fine. It is only about 5000 miles old and I checked it and it spun fine.

Thats ok for asking, but its a exedy stage 2 but I'm pretty sure I put it in correctly cause it was fine for about 3000 miles before it started makin this noise, and as long as the clutch is alligned I don't really know how else you can fuck up a clutch install. And I did it with the motor out of the car.

when u took the tranny out the second time did you check the pressure plate bolts? Cuz I had a Tripple Plate in my AE86 and I had a problem going into reverse with the gears gringing and shifting to 3rd and 4th when i had it in Neutral cruzin. and it had a weird rattle when i was redlining 9G's. Turns out I broke 10 of the 13 bolts holdin the pressure plate to the flywheel.
Plus a lot of after market clutches require special TOB's like the OS Giken

Well, I know people runnin exedy's and none of them have a special TOB and also, I'm pretty positive I didn't break any pressure plate bolts cause it would probably do the grindin other times than only in first and reverse and at low revs and speed.

also depending on the thickness of the clutch set up you might have to add or remove a washer from the Fork Pivot Ball. again like a OSGIKEN you got to add or remove one (cant remeber)

well, I dont think that is the problem cause I know people runnin the same setup and they have had no problem with this. I am just really lookin for someone that has had this same problem..... I know its a rare one. or at least it seems no one has had the same problem.

i know a buddy of mine had a similar sounding problem after he did his clutch and it turned out to be his pilot bearing

Well, thats one thing I didn't replace when I did the swap...just out of laziness. I just really don't want to drop the tranny out again, if I don't have to. I just don't really understand what the pilot bearing actually does. And, could adjusting the clutch pedal have anything to do with it. Also, just to let ya'll know, I have replaced the clutch master cylinder and bypassed the clutch dampner the other day and it drove great for a few days, and then just today, it did it again in reverse. Anyone have some more information on what the pilot bearing even does, because from what I know about it, I don't think it could be the problem, but I may be mistaken.

are u sure it couldnt possibly be your rear brake pads?

The pilot bearing keeps the input shaft of the tranny centered. It does'nt carry too much load but if its messed up, it will let you know. While your at a stop, does your car make a noise while your clutch is engaged or disengaged?
Noise w/ pedal UP = pilot bearing
Noise w/ pedal DOWN = throwout bearing

I know that mine is bad cause it does make a noise when the pedal is up and goes away when it is pushed down, I was just wondering if it can cause such a significant grinding noise, as described in the beginning of the thread. And it only does it sometimes.

Hey I just did the same install as you. I didnt didn't replace my pilot bearing as well. I did check it to make sure it was ok, which it was. However, I am getting slight noise when the pedal is out. As for the grinding, Did you make sure the clutch fork was properly installed and all the springs on there were good? It might not be disengaging the clutch to the fullest and that might be why you are grinding. This happened to me before.

i heard the noise today a few times when i was riding in his car. to me, its not really a grind. it sounds like one of those toys with the rip cord on them that u pull to make something fly off of it or whatever.. it sounds a little more high pitch than a drill.
