View Full Version : Downpipe for slammed S-chassis

Ok, search is broke, or at best finicky, because I just tried and nothing happened. I was mocked by a blank, white page.
Anyway, I have the Greddy MX downpipe which has been on the car for 3 years, and even when I was 4x4 spec the downpipe has scrapped and banged on speed bumps.
Now fast forward 3 years and I am finally a resident in Slamtown, I need a downpipe that would start off the entire exhaust like an inch higher so that I'll hit frame before I hit exhaust.
I've heard the Tougefactory cat delete downpipe is pretty nice, like it sits high and tucks up nicely above the frame rails, but I can't verify with a broke search function.
So I'm just wondering if you fellow Slamtown residents (you know who you are, you guys all posted in the DOWN LOW thread) can chime in with what type of downpipe you all got.

Id say if you are looking for something with ground clearance, check out the Circuit Sports turbo outlet + downpipe combination. Its a bit pricey, but it seems pretty good. I was looking at getting one when I get my motor put in.
Heres the link: http://www.frsport.com/Circuit_Sports__CS__SR20DET_Downpipe___O2_Elbow_Ex tension_p_1358.html
Theres another site with pictures of it installed on a car, and it sits parallel to the frame so it wont even get close to hitting the ground...

I would also suggest the Cs as well. It may be a bit of a bitch to put on...but i think it will give you the clearance you are looking for.

You'll spend a pantload less for custom, and if you get a good exhaust guy, the quality is as good.
Plus you know you're getting exactly what you want.
Hell, for what you would pay for some exhaust systems, you could buy a MIG welder and do it yourself.
SoSideways
12-21-2006, 12:23 PM
Haha yeah, I actually have a friend that just picked up welding, I told him I'd have him weld it up for me if he's down.
Actually that's the owner of the S14 that's in the pic that I posted up in the DOWN LOW thread. He needs a new downpipe too cause his exhaust sits lower than mine.

The Circuit Sports is great, but damn if you ever need to remove it. I'd buy it, cut it, and add a flange in to make it two pieces.

thoes oval downpipes are kinda dumb. just take your normal round one and cut like 2 inches of pipe off.

I'll check the price of piping around here and then go from there.
chmercer - you mean like cut 2" off the top where the flange goes into the O2 housing right? And then reweld the flange on?

Hmm... I think the Greddy one might be mild steel... if that's the case I'll just cut that off and reweld...

I bought a blitz back in the day. When I made my custom exhaust, we cut it short and ovalized it as well with a 2x4. It's above the frame rail and impossible to hit. The only part of my exhaust that scrapes is in the back where it goes underneath the rear axle. Even there it only hits when I slide off large drop offs on track.

Yeah, that part of my exhaust is horrible. As a matter of fact, the flange that sits right around that area has a chunk missing when my fiance hit 2 manholes on the road. Knocked the nuts/bolts loose.
That flange catches the painted on arrows and cross walk stripes and stuff on the road. Pretty hot. And car's going lower. Smart me.

I agree with CHmercer above, just cut an inch or two out, make sure the pipe and flange for the straight pipe (test) does not hit the body, and you're good.
SoSideways

Only problem I forsee I might run into is the fact that all these crappy downpipes have a section of smaller diametered piping just after the O2 housing flange, which makes for easy access to put the nuts on the studs.
If I cut right there, no more easy access.
So... the cut will have to be a section just after that smaller diameter piping I guess?

Cut the pipe under the flange, not at the flange. We normally cut the mid section before the bend. Becareful, as you will have to pull your exhaust a little further up. That's why I say cut an inch. Try to visualize it. Your dp is not straight. Measure twice, and cut just enough.

Even if you've cut too much off for maximum ground clearance, can't you just kinda add an in or two back at the test pipe/cat location to make up for that reduction in length?

yeah you could do that but more work. i just cut like 2 inches out of the straight part under the flange and moved it forward. my exhaust was all ghetto droopy so we were redoing all the hangars and shit anyway.
one thing, it will make the exhaust heat more noticable on the floorboard. i assume this is why the downpipes hang so far down in the first place.

Yeah... I'll be sure to pick up some of that heat reflecting GOOOOOOOLLLLLLD from Enjuku when I go up there to pick up some toe arms.
Peak Performance toe arms FTMFW. Then hopefully in a couple of weeks pick up some PP RUCA.
215/40/17 mounted via ether. Gonna put air in it and lower car some more.
Tonight's the night my exhaust dies.

Well, it'll be put on that "heat shield" just above where the factory cat location was, and the car's gonna be slammed, so not really anyone can see it...
But yeah, I was planning on wrapping the downpipe with that heat wrap stuff, and then adding the heat reflecting foil crap on the heat shield for "Operation Cool Heel", because I actually melted a Nike air shoe from driving on the highway...
That sucked.

Anything to help with the burning hot spot where my heel sits.
Ok, so after following Kidynomite's advice, I pulled my 8/6 springs off of my Stance coilovers and put the 9/7s on. However, the springs are not shorter (he said they were) so I'm still not able to lower the front enough.
Now I've got all 3 collars stacked up front and can't go low enough...
Shorter spring or preload spring + move lower bracket up?

And..... I found the solution to my problem via searching (it works now).

leave only the spring perch collar on and lock it to the lower bracket. Collar locks the lower bracket and the bracket locks the collar.

I actually just took the collar that locks the lower bracket off and put it on the bottom of the bracket.
So I still have the 3 collars on there.

if your lazy or just want to burn some $$ you can always get a GP sports down pipe... http://www.gpsports.co.jp/product/exas/alfp.jpg
friend of mine did that to his coupe and he would have to be driving like an idiot (looking for potholes and large dips) for it to scrape.
so yeah it sat up in there and there was a lot of warm feet action from it sitting so close to the floor.
just another option thats all

Yeah friend of mine is actually running the GP Sport cat delete downpipe on his S14...
It's hot, but man, it was pricey.
I think it's like the same price as the Circuit Sport oval shaped DP now...
KiDyNomiTe
12-24-2006, 08:16 PM
Glad you got all your stuff figured out.
I just have the flex pipe, the flex section takes the damage, but its just the weaved cover that scrapes, so far no dents, but I guess I will wait till I hit some rumble strips...
SoSideways
12-24-2006, 08:22 PM
Right now I have "the rake" going, so the rear can come down another 20mm, since that's how much I lowered the front coilovers, plus the 215/40 tire is already 1" smaller in diameter than the 225/45s...
But because of the rake, the car's driving better and the flanges aren't catching as much as before as now the exhaust is no longer angled down but kinda leveled... so I catch all 3 flanges now lol

well its actually almost $100 dollars cheaper... the d spec which is the line for lowered cars... d spec II is the newer re visioned line. I dont see a d spec of the car delete

about stance, i SUPPOSE if you reallly wanted to get the front lower (dont see how you could even drive with it at max low, tire would be saying whats up to the fender rail every time you hit a pebble) you could just order some springs from qa1, whatever length, whatever rate.
Wykydtron
12-24-2006, 09:31 PM
How big do you want the downpipe?
I had a friend custom fab a 3 inch down pipe to straight catback with 1 minor bend, zero cats. it hung an inch below the frame and it was fine.
To top that off, I had 15 inch rims at the time with AGX springs/struts. X_X I never drug ass once.

From what I've seen, if your gonna pull two collars out of a stance coil your gonna need more than 9kgmm to keep the wheel out of the frame.

I don't know what qa1 is but we STANCE has a 150mm spring option, so 25mm shorter than what he has right now.

u can get like 5-6 inch springs with up to like 20kg off summit like 30-60 bucks
japan coils all use like 2.5 id springs right

Ya stance has a 2.5 id as well. Got a bunch of springs all over the place, around $40 iirc Or just ask for a different rate at purchase for no charge.

I'm prolly gonna go with swift crap from logan down the line.
9/7 or 10/8s
inch shorter springs
helpers for the rear.
That way, I'll have a shit pile of money in KTS coilovers for no reason.

Well right now I'm pretty much as low as I can go without having my tires say what's up to the frame rails and still clear everything.
My stock chuki SE lip is about 3 fingers height from the ground, so once aero goes on it'll be ridiculous.
I might order the shorter springs for the front soon but right this minute I don't feel like pulling the coilovers off yet again to mess with them (did them twice this weekend and man what a PITA).
So what's up with the helper springs in the rear? I have the regular Stance coils without the helper springs, and 9/7 springs on it now, what would the helper springs do for me other than to put a dent in my already smashed in wallet?
KiDyNomiTe
12-26-2006, 09:44 AM
It will lower the rear slightly, depending on how much you compress/preload the helper spring.
The main purpose is traction, if you unload one of the rear tires on a typical setting it will just unload the shock a slight distance and possibly lift a wheel. With helper spring it will have a little more travel keeping the wheel planted.
McRussellPants
12-26-2006, 12:20 PM
Its to keep my spring from making a racket every time I unload a rear wheel and it goes uncaptive.
shit sucks.

I guess I was talking about the Project Nissan one then, that one is a solid piece that goes to the cat location, and looks to tuck pretty good.
My next alternative I guess would be the GP Sport cat delete one, as that one looks pretty tucked too...?
Screw it, custom... haha
Just get a regular stainless one...I like blitz. THen cut it and weld it if necessary
