View Full Version : Ground, brake booster, and positive terminal questions

I have a bad feeling about the way I have my positive terminal connected. What's a better way to make this? I'm not electrically inclined:

My brake booster tested out fine (per the FSM), but I also have a bad feeling about the amount of rust:

This is where I have the engine ground (the ground coming off of the intake manifold). I haven't had any problems, although I just did this the other day. Is this alright?:

I also have the battery grounded to the front of the chassis right behind the headlight. There's also something else grounded right there, which I think is the front lighting ground?

the battery terminal looks ok, as long as when you move it, it doesn't disconnect.....if you can, get rid of that master cylinder. if not, clean off that rust with a wire brush.......make sure your grounds are as short as possible, and the mounting location is as free of paint and rust as possible. as for the location you have shown, i would move it. there are a few holes on the side of the strut tower that are threaded. i recomend using those.

I agree, the terminal looks fine, just ensure it won't come loose and give you problems out on the road (like my buddy...). The booster looks fine, mine was the same way. I took it off, sanded it down and put a coat of fresh paint on it; good as new. (Surface rust isn't anything to be feared.) As for the ground, as long as its metal to metal, should have no problems! If you ground to the chassis, I would sand off the paint behind the terminal and then tighten it down. Put a coat of paint over the terminal and any showing bare metal that you sanded down to protect it from rusting.
Also, if that ground cable is long enough, you could put that terminal beind the nut that tightens the negative terminal down on the battery.
As for the massive amount of ground wires going to that terminal up front, thats just a slew of grounds for random things on the body harness. My guess is lights like you mentioned and other functions up front (light motors, relay grounds?).

You should bolt the positive wire thru the eye whole, too ensure that it doesn't come loose. The master cylinder it's just ugly and looks brittle. i'd replace it.hold up did i get Pwn'd!!

most likely you have rust on the brake booster cause the seal in the back of the master cylinder is leaking brake fluid in there, replace them both

I'll try sanding down the brake booster.
As for the engine ground, to put it on the strut tower I guess I'd have to find the perfect screw size.

that rust on your brake booster is most likely from a leaky, shitty brake master cylinder. sand it down, and repaint if the metal is still good. i would think about replacing that mc as well.

dude i can almost gaurantee its just a 10mm hex head like every other screw in the engine bay

They're finnnee!
Pos batt terminal is good as long as it doesn't come loose.
Clean that mo' fo too.
Ground is good. Make sure there isn't any paint between the terminal and the body contact.
I might get a new MC. As long as the seal is good on the booster, the outside doesn't affect its operation.

OH! Another thing, I always shock myself to shit when I get out of my car. To the point where it actually hurts sometimes...
This is because it isn't grounded correctly? Or because I didn't scrape the paint off under the engine ground?

How do you shock yourself? WTF? Explain more please.

Like...when I get out of the car, if my leg touches the side of the chassis. Or if I get out and touch the door. And it's not a small shock. It audible. I did it one time and my girlfriend actually heard it across the yard. lol
Getting shocked is that prompted me to re-do my grounds...
