I went to replace my stock fuel pump with my new walbro, and found lots of rust going on in the gas tank. im not very comfortable putting a brand new walbro into a pool of rust. the car has sat for a long time. and i bought it as a shell pretty much, so god only knows how long it sat. i want to figure out if i should just find a new gas tank, or if anyone knows some easy ways or if its possible to clean the tank i have. any help is much appreciated.

I don't know why rust is in there, being as how the tank is some form of plastic.
My only suggestion, is drain the tank, and try to wipe everything out with a lint free towel.

Yeah empty it and wipe it down and hope you can protect the new gas you will be putting in the tank won't get contaminated with rust.

You can also replace tanks.

hmm, i didnt know it was plastic. its an s13. it sounds like metal and its cool to the touch. so i just assumed it was metal. i also notice when i pulled the pump the seal was missing so perhaps that was the problem.

It sounds like you have a leak somewhere in the tank and moisture is causing the rust. You can tell by the gas smell in the cabin, or if the tank doesn't depressurize when you open the gas cap. If you're missing the bowl gasket that goes around the fuel pump cap then that would do it.
If you don't have a leak, another cause could be that water somehow got into the tank.
