so i was going thru the stuff i need to take to willow springs this saturday and i noticed that my helmet had gotten wet...
it was under a balcony but the water leaked thru and went into the box that my helmet was in...
so now it stinks really nasty and i was wondering if anyone knows a solution to this problem...
i've thought of fabreeze but i want to get rid of the odor and not just cover it up... i don't want my head smelling this nasty after i wear the helmet so i want to get rid of the odor as best as i can.
any suggestions??
ps; i found a deodorizing spray online but i want to hear some other suggestions before i get the spray. im cheap and poor :-/

what kind of helmet is it? usually, helmets come with removeable cheekpads and stuff...if not, dry it out and get some of that deodorizer...im sure there are shloads of deodorizing products at target or something...when your helmet was in the box, was it upside down? funny how the water dripped on the box and made contact with the inside padding...you live and you learn, you dont keep helmets outdoors under balconies, lol...

Febreeze actually removes odor pretty well. However, my helmet only sees about 20 minutes of wear time a month (autox) & I wear a head sock. So it doesn't really smell bad or anything at all.
For other stuff I've used Febreeze on (car carpet & seats, etc), works pretty nice.
Just spray on the febreeze, let it sit and dry up, then pat it out w/ your hand - a lot times a layer of dust like particles form after spraying it, patting it out afterwards gets all that nastiness that was in there out.
Simpson also has a helmet fresh spray they sell directly on their site, I believe.

i'd say possibly using regular dish washing agent. in a spray fashion, then using water in a spray fashion then take a blow dryer to it. time consuming but hopefully it should help w/o deteriorating the padding like other cleansing agents

baking soda. that is the best just let it sit.

let baking soda sit - in a well ventilated place. after racing open wheel in hte rain - everythigns soaked... and i had to just suck it up at 2 day events when it'd rain the first day.
i remember my dad and my ex in the laundry area of the holiday inn - elgin south carolina scrubbing my driving suit with a brush and warm water and then drying it with hair dryers for HOURS - yes she was the shit back then.
DO YOU GUYS KNOW HOW NASTY RACING IN HTE RAIN IS??? its sandy gritty wet nasty oily brake dusty gravel infested stankwater. and my suit had one white arm LOL - and they got it perfectly clean ;)
they didnt think about the helmet LOL - so that was damp to say the least - but luckily i have always got extra gloves and I wont race without a neck brace...
back to your problem:
i say try a hair dryer and baking soda... it worked for my stuff.
MILD SOAP - if needed.

so how should i apply the baking soda? should i just sprinkle some inside the helmet,, cuz remember, it's the padding and foam that got wet...

i say hairdry it some first - then sprinkle and let air out some and hairdryer it more - and then sprinkle and let it sit some more - the hot hairdryer should help it.

Scrub the inside with baking soda then get it all off with water and dry it with a hairdryer.

Best thing to do is wipe out as much water as possible, then shoot the helmet with febreeze. But the key is right after you spray the helmet, place newspaper in there also.
The newspaper will absorb the smell.
I did that when my helmet smelled like cigarettes and funk.

thanks for the suggestion zar... the helmet clean spray still hasn't gotten here...
i called the bell store and said it was shipped DHL 2 day and said i would have it by yesterday... so i'm hoping it will come today, if not, teh event is tomorrow so i'll have to go get some fabreeze and newspapers :P
i'm weary of the baking soda + water method because i looked around my house (male college students) and couldn't find a hair dryer... haha
i hope the helmet clean spray gets here soon

IF you want to cover the smell, get a bounce or whatever dryer sheet and stick it under the helmet. It really works. I left one sheet in my car.. It really smell like fresh laundry for like a month. and it wouldnt go away - after awhile it will give u a headache though.

i guess i'm doing the baking soda+air dry, and fabreeze tonight... if it still smells, i'm gonna try to wear a bandana or something over my head cuz i dont have a headsock or anything like that... fuck i hope the smell goes away... its REALLY nasty.

I don't think you should have any problem. They just want to see that you have one. Bring yours just in case and don't say anything.
But I'd only use that helmet as long as it hasn't had any hits.
