View Full Version : why does something always have to go wrong?

I was driving down the road, sort of rough on the car (staying in third for a while and accelorating pretty fast) when i hear this pop! Last time i heard a noise like that it was a blown radiator hose! I looked at the temp gauge and it read top notch hot. I stop take a look at all the hoses and see smoke comming from under the xhaust manifold. I then restart the car, and the temp gauge registers just under half way hot! I continued to drive to a friends house and the knocking started getting really loud. It only happens if i am accelorating in any gear, but once i get to a constant rpm the knocking is gone. When i arrive at B's house we go for a diagnosis drive, and can't figure anything out. It sounds like the knocking is comming from the passengers side towards the intake manifold? The only thing B can come up w/ is that the pop was a blown seal, and the knocking is from air getting into the cylinders, leaning out the mixture and causing detenation! Sounds reasonable, but would absolutely love for everyone to give their own diagnosis, that way i can play w/ alot of different things.

Sorry for the length but wanted to be as detailed as possible!

I am so crazy lost on this one! I got up this morning and drove to work. The car didn't make any unusual noises, but the temp gauge never moved, and the a/c now doesn't work. It is a three mile drive, so it def should have gotten warm by then. After work, i drive home and the same thing is going on, but when i get into my neighborhood it start hearing the knocking again. I told one of the service advisors at work about it and he said the knocking might be caused by octane. I am so confused. What do you guys think i should buy and replace, and in what order.

I know i need a new timming chain, all new belts, my a/c compressor has been making a really loud hissing noise kind of like metal on metal so i need a new one of those if not a hole new system, new injectors, fuel filter...and anything else you guys recommend.

cracked head? which in turn leaked coolant on the exhaust manifold causing it to burn off in smoke? a pop like that is usually cooling system related, especially if your temp guage got that high. i'd start by looking at the cooling system.

Okay, that makes sense, but would that cause the knocking/rattling sound? Also if it is a cracked head and is making the system overheat, why hasn't my temp gauge been pasted the halfway mark, since the original spike?
Also the reason i didn't feel anything from the a/c was b/c the air was blowing on the windsheild and i didn't notice!

Is it possible for me to buy a 1991 head and put it on my 90 ka24e block? If not then i must buy a new engine

the KA24E and KA24DE heads are NOT interchangeable (Nissan is not like Honda ). As for the knocking, I'd say you did more damage than you want to believe...but that's up to you. Do a compression test.

I just don't understand what happened. It just all of a sudden popped and well yuo already the read the rest. What all do you think is wrong?

pops are usually cooling system related like i said. nobody here is gonna know for sure what's wrong, and you're obviously not gonna fix it yourself, so just take it someplace.

actually i did fix it myself

I filled up my radiator w/ water, turn on the engine, and looked for were the water was leaking. It was comming from a by-pass hose under the intake manifold, so i went to autozone, and got a new hose. It took me two hours to get the old one off and new one on. I then filled up the radiator w/ water, again w/out bleeding the purge valve or whatever it is called (due to light and time issues) and drove home. I arrive at home, and my temp gauge is sky high again. I am guessing it is b/c i didn't bleed out the air bubbles. I pop the hood and hear a pretty loud hissing noise comming from the same area as the replaced hose. Since it was pitch black and i dont have a flash light i will just leave it until tomorrow. The last time i didn't get the air out it did the same thing, w/out the hissing! I opened the radiator cap and stuck a running hose in there and let it work it's bubbles out by itself! I am hopping this will all be over with after i do the hose trick, but you never know until it happens.

thanks to Sleek240 for his PM even though i had already changed the hose before i read it.
Good call tnord about the pop being cooling system related
