car: stock 89 s13, 5 speed

issue: car attempts to start when someone hits the starter solonoid with a hammer, even then its miserable about it. Solution: replace starter

however (insert the eeerie music)

When its not trying to start with someone hitting the starter solonoid, there is a ticking noise under the intake (isolated to a plug that plugs into something under the font of the intake, near the intake suppor) also ticking from the relay/fuse box under the air intake box driver side

now is the relay just not happy about the starter being old, or am I running into some other issues?

(dont want an answer: 'if you dont know what you are doing take it to a mechanic'... because chances are, you probably had a shop do all your work for you and you shouldn't even be in the tech section :P )

same thing happened to me, same wierd ticking noise also. I just changed out the starter then viola no ticking, only starting! (insert triumphant music). Whether thats the problem or not, try out a new starter and see if the ticking goes away. nothing will explode! i know you know that tho, from nwn and all.

yeah i'd swap it out right now, but I'm going to a local hockey game, figured I throw it out on the internet anyway.

maybe the starter isn't getting enough power. Make sure connections are tight and that the starter is getting 12V when trying to start. If it is getting voltage and it's still not starting then I would say faulty starter.

yeah battery is fine. Even tried to jump the car too. Its the starter.

I'll follow up tomorrow with answer as to what the issue is. reason: searching this forum leads to a lot of people with issues, but no answers. Like they only care about getting the car running then you never hear from them again.

the terrible one

hella wierd. i have this same problem also...check the ignition coil also. see if theres voltage going to the primary coil. also be sure to leave your car battery on a charger..if you keep trying to start the car and it wont start itll completely drain the battery.

other starter in, its turing over...but not starting.

(timing issues most likely, i'll retard it a little... but dont worry, i'm not going to noob this forum up with another 'HELP TIMING!!!11' thread)

turns out it wasnt retarded, it was the ground wasn't on fully. One starter was bad however, but now she starts.

yay! time to sell this bitch.
