Hi.
What are the differences between the KA DOHC of the 91, 92 S13 and the 95-96 S14 KA.
Are they interchangeable? As in if you have an S14, can you swap a KA from a 91 or 92 DOHC, or do you you have to stick with the S14's KA?
To swap, is there any difference in wiring harness, motor mounts, different trannys?
Or is it a pretty simple swap? Thanks for the help.
I have a 95 and was wondering if I have to stay that year KA or I have some lee-way in using another motor without any customization or electrical work. Thanks.

To do an s14 swap into an s13 you need the s13 intake manifold and all the sensors. Change them over to the s14 ka and put it in. Should crank right up. Or use the entire s14 harness.

Late production 1995 and up are OBDII, so the swap difficulty depends on when your car was manufactured. Either way though, the swap is simple and very basic.

there are a few minor differences. perhaps r240na will jump in here and clarify, because i certainly don't remember what they all are.
the easiest thing to do is just swap intake manifolds. use your old intake manifold and use all your old sensors.
the strategy is, in a nutshell:
if anything else doesn't plug up, throw your original back on. for purposes of fitment (as in dropping it in, plugging in sensors, bolting up manifolds, accessories, etc.) the block and head are basically the same for dohcs.
as for legality, i think you have to use an engine from the same or newer year. not that anyone will ever know if you drop in a '91.

any other stuff different that you should know about before swapping s14 ka into 91-94 s13?

No, pretty much answered above; use block and head and re-use older stuff for plug and play. Trannies are the same aswell. Go through FAQs for more info.

You can use the s14 intake mani. when swapping a s14 into a s13. I think I might have had to swap some little things from the s13 mani. to the s14 mani. but its not a big deal. There are a couple elec. plugs on the s14 mani. that dont hook up to the s13 wiring harness which doesnt matter. The CEL doesnt come on in my car and I have the emissisons removed too. I think there is a thread on using the s14 mani. on nico or something. The s14 mani. has longer runners or something like that, which is why the s14 has the same power of a s13 despite the milder cams. At least I think I heard that from someone more knowledgeable than me.

Wrong. The S13s have SCVs on the manifold, that's the only difference and that's why the later models make the same power when using milder cams.

Yep the Mafs are different, along with the OBD-II changes from 7/95 to end production in 98'. And the intake mani as previously mentioned. You will have to use your S13 ignition system, just remove the S14 dist and put in yours. Easier than swapping out your engine harness just for the sake of the coil. (it's internal on the S14s).
