ok as u can see
course is nice and wide
basically a big oval
u can really work on your entries and line
we set up clipping pints as well if u want to work on lining your car up correctly
instructors are on hand and they are all super duper cool.
course is very safe, i know many of the girls from drifting pretty got to learn there, i know i learned a lot there and worked on tandem drifts and stuff
course is safe and very easy to lear on. tires last well there too.
and usually passengers are ok, depending on the driver, i know for most groups passengers ok but first timers, instructors only
but u can really learn your car wlel and how to control your slide as well at this place
totally worth it
ill be swinginb y here too. probably help out with the stuff some

that does look safe... Where exactly is this at again? (please be close to sd, please be close to sd, please be close to sd!)
also, does this mean there will only be 15 cars there, or just 15 newbs and a bunch of other intermediate/good drivers too?
Dousan_PG
11-21-2006, 10:29 PM
mostly newbs and some intermediate drives
the advance type of folk or doing HORSE THIEF MILE at the same track. that place u can really destroy your car.
but its not SO close to SD
sorry
its out by lancaster
take the 5 up (past LA) and head east on the 14
city is rosamond
maybe google/mapquset it from SD
some of the SD folks usually do the event too. i drive up from Orange County to go.

Offtopic, but do you happen to know if FLYBERT/Chris Mendoza's dad is still able to weld diffs? I've been trying to get a hold of him.
And anyone considering going. GO! Get your ass to balcony, tires do last forever there and it's a relaxed environment even if you are a total noob.

I've been a Just Drifter for 2 years and I have a problem, I'm addicted to their countless amount of track times, friendly and professional environment and if need be the one on one tutorials in your own car !
Seriously Just Drift is the shit and if HTM wasn't open on that same day i probaly would do balcony. I think I've done balcony like 6 times now and it never gets tiring nor does it ever get boring. Its a beginners track as well as an intermediate... its how you look at it and how you enter. It has taught me a lot, and I would HIGHLY recommend anyone from California (North or South) to attend. Don't give me an excuse about how far it is blah blah balh. Head out the night before with some friends and make it a trip. Split a room at the Essex house (if you tell them you are going to willowsprings you get a room for like 70 bucks).
Definately is a weekends worth of fun.
P.S. I head out from Santa Barbara so I don't want to hear any complaining. Do enough events and get good enough and you will graduate to HTM one day, arguably the bestest drift track on the west coast!
On a side note there is advance/expert group at htm that same day so on breaks you can swing over to HTM and see some top class drivers. Remember top 4 of pro am are Just Drifters, just being around those cats makes you a better driver.

WA to SoCal ain't that bad of a drive. The number one rule you have to abid by is to plan out check points. It also helps to have some sort of sleeping remedy. I'd recommend flying!

Just to let you guys know, balcony is the track that all us advanced JD'ers learned on. I love that course because it teaches you everything you need to know about drifting. First it teaches you how to use all the proper ways of initiating drifts. For the main turn, a clutch kick is best and you can extend with the ebrake if you'd like. On the back turn, the best way to initiate is with the ebrake from as early as possible. This part of the course gives you bigger balls because the earlier and faster you initiate, the better. This would be recomended for intermediate and advanced people only. Balcony also teaches you to take proper lines because when you come off the large safe skidpad, the straightaway entry is narrow. If you learn how to carry maximum speed through there going full throttle, you will get good really fast. This straightaway can allow for a fun manji drift line or a nice straight to carry speed into the long ebrake slide into the back corner.
I'm not sure if charlie is going to set up the figure 8, but that's always another option on balcony that tests your ability to take a good line and stay sideways. Here is a video of me along with jason L. and davedge.
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3316420290833171473&q=just+drift
In addition, if charlie allows it, you can drop into the keyhole coming off the backcorner. Dropping into the keyhole is a really good test on how to adjust line, especially for the low power KA guys. If you can manage to drop into the keyhole with your KA without straightening out, you know your skill level is getting pretty high. Combine this with a gangster longslide and I'd rank you as intermediate/advanced.
Go to the balcony, get awesome, and come out to HTM when you have the experience.

6+ hrs each way from NorCal, definitely worth the drive. Too bad CHP pulled me over 10 min from home.... "NO Officer, I haven't been drinking... just driving back from Willow Springs." :jerkit:
I enjoyed the track time and the balcony is such a great course for beginners. Near the end of the day, I watched the HTM event and that looked like a great road course. Too bad I'm not even remotely ready for that.
I think I'll have to come back for more "winter" events. Changing tires in 100+ degree heat (earlier JD event I attended) was just crazy.
Looking forward to pics! Maybe someone actually took pics of me.

Here's a zip file of a bunch of short video clips that Agent_S13/Aaron was kind enough to take:
http://www.pixelstorm.net/videos/drift/vids.zip (~53mb)
There's not too many folks in there (but plenty of vids of me and john/nekoball tearing through at 12mph).
There's one or two of the blue 350, the m-150 350, the red s14 (allen/alan? sorry, bad with names and I don't know most of you), the two tone corolla hatch. And a couple others I can't remember.
Thanks Aaron!
And thanks JD guys, Norcal is sad lately.

Flybert
12-01-2006, 06:30 PM
Just for the event. You'll most likely be safe with 87 since it's a KA and the weather is cold but without the knock sensor not working, it won't trigger the ECU to retard your timing if you have detonation for whatever reason.

man, i need to get the car up to running condition...
how many tires do newbs/beginners usually go thru (on avg) at the beginner events?
Flybert
12-03-2006, 11:39 PM
It's good to bring 2 new tires that you can burn. When I was stock KA, I don't remembering burning all the way through 2 new tires. Even nowadays I limit myself to 2 new tires because I can't afford to burn more. It's just that nowadays with the power I have, I actually can kill 2 tires no problem.
94cc0rd
12-04-2006, 12:56 AM
yea .. my first event, i was barely spinning my tires... only spinning my car hAHA... i did go thru a pair of tires that had about 50-60% left but then a couple people drove my car... charlie drove my car once and the other instructor guy drove it once... and this other guy drove it twice... so im sure they did all the burning of the tires... haha
oo yea, my vlsd sucks.. but with a welded or 2way lsd, will it make it easier for me to learn how to drift, or will it make it easier to drift period..?
Flybert
12-04-2006, 02:19 AM
What did the instructors say about your vlsd? Sometimes they work OK but sometimes they work like crap.
94cc0rd
12-04-2006, 02:40 AM
haha they said my vlsd sucks... they told me to get a welded diff...
i just checked the driver profiles on justdrift.com
the other instructor who drove my car was tommy suel
oh yea, who do i contact about getting a discount on federal tires from jd? or can logan get them cheaper than jd even after their sponsership discount?
Flybert
12-04-2006, 03:04 AM
Yeah, tommy knows his shit and he's a badass driver. The welded gives you better throttle control. You still have to be quick on the steering so you don't spin but it will make you a lot more consistant.

12-08-2006, 12:12 AM
it shouldnt, i have atleast 2 cels i dont even know how many know. it seriuously doesnt matter if its the stupid ones. if you scared just retard timing a tad and run 91 done.
Dousan_PG
12-08-2006, 12:15 AM
yeah u can run higher octane at the track too, they sell 100 there
KA was the only motor i ever drove that i never worried about. thing is like a T1000

84GTSR5
12-08-2006, 12:47 AM
Yeah, you should be OK to drift with those 2 codes if you're NA KA. Just put 91 octane in and you should be fine.
The Ka is meant to run on 91 octane all the time, is the minimum required octane. And if you ask where i got the info from its on the Factory bocklet.

if i was a mod id delete that post. it says that like in the freakin gas cap area. i dont think anyone runs 91 just while driving around, you certainly dont need it. even so im sure he is aware of that.
unstoppable, im trying to find the pic of the rod i shot out the side of my last ka. lol

91 isn't the minimum.
If you read what is says on the gas cap, "For optimum performance use premium fuel".

I always ran mine on 87, sometimes I would throw 89 or 91 in it but never noticed any difference. Mine ran strong for 2 years of beating on it and is still alive and running with over 200k miles on it.

hey guys... theres a 50% chance of rain on saturday and i'm scurred...
have any of you guys been to an event when it was raining? what should i bring in case it rains? jackets/umbrella.. i don't have one of those tent things so if it does rain i'll be standing under my umbrella :(
is it a lot harder to learn how to drift when its raining? ... i'm so worried and excited at the same time, i can't sleep..

bring jackets and a really really study canopy. bring tarps to cover ur tools and lots of zip ties. umbrella is very wise. as for learning well its yes and no. pretty much it takes less effort to continue a slide and sometimes initiate since theres no friction downsides are no traction so its harder to control, more understeer so u might have a hard time initiating, and if u recover wrong and sloppy itll have adverse affects. its a good learning experience so just go a little bit slower. i dont kno what track it is since i just saw this post but if theres mud be careful :D (i still have a piece of buttonwillow in my car from a year back from all the rain and mud)
ALL IN ALL:
go slow, dont countersteer or turn in too crazy like u normally do cuz the rain will help u out there, mayb do some ebrake and clutch kicks maybe? its not essentially harder but different from what u would expect.

I used to go canyon drifting in the rain back in the day before there were a ton of drift events and it was fun as hell. I also did a JD event at the balcony where it rained in the morning. You can start your drifts so much earlier and you don't waste tires. It's a totally different experience. It's slow paced which is good for beginners and it gives you some experience with throttle control. No more NA KA full throttle action. It'll feel like you have a v8 under your hood so you gotta modulate the throttle.
