alright i cant be real specific on this one because i have no clue what is causing the noise....i can tell you that the noise is kind of a ticking noise and it occurs when i step on the gas. someone told me that it could be the tranny..but i am not sure and that is why i am posting this.....its not a real harsh ticking noise just one that bugs the hell out of me.....it doesnt happen when i rev the engine, only when i am stepping on the gas and moving...i cant understand it....is the problem serious or should i just turn my radio louder so as not to hear the noise .
would be of any help to tell you that the car is an automatic
o well any help would be appreciated

My old boss used to have this Toyota 4-Runner, and he changed the headers for some unknown reason. But that ticking sound came from a header leak. It wasn't sealed properly or something. I dunno if thats your answer, but might give you a spot to look.

Should have posted in tech...
At any rate, have we ruled out "add oil"? Also, may need a valve adjustment. Could also be a leak from the exhaust manifold. Actually it could be a lot of things - but that's where I'd start.
(240s come with A manifold that can be replaced by A header - it is an I-4, not a V-8, so there is not a plural... sorry personal issue )

ummmm... it cant be adding oil cuz i just changed the oil like 200 miles ago..........my car is an 89 and it has about 62,000 miles on it and the noise sounds as if it might be coming from the wheels...but i am really not sure...it could be the same thing that meowth is talking about.....
Meowth..the noise you hear is it a kind of ticking sound or wut...the only problem i have with believing that its the wheels is that it only happens when i hit the gas....if that makes sense

Does the ticking speed seem to be in retrospect with the speed of your car? Try going about 30mph and take your foot off the gas and push the clutch in all the way. Is the ticking still there?

continuing what thurazor said..
Is the sound random? does it go with speed of car, or speed of engine?
Also can you tell an approximate location from where the sound is comming? behind you, engine bay, under you?
Does the sound occur in any other circumstances?

I was going to say this.
Not just stones though - sometimes you can get a nail in there that is hard to spot.

the car is an automatic.....but the sound does seem to be in influenced by the speed of the car although...if i floor it the engine sound will be louder than the ticking noise so i dont think its the coming from the engine...but i can tell that the sound is coming from under the car......not sure whether it is in front or in back....would a nail in the tire make that kind of sound though.....i will have to check on that......the more i think about it the more i think it is from the tires but i can really tell...ill go search the tires over for any nails or stones.
thanx for help guys

If it was squeaking I'd say it's a wheel bearing, but a ticking....? With your car in park, turn the steering wheel a quarter of a rotation to the left and to the right and listen for any ticks or clicks. If you hear the same noise than chances are your boot on that side of the car has worn down enough and thus caused your cv joint(s) to have significant wear.
I doubt this is the cause of your ticking because you usually can't hear a damaged cv joint that well, but it couldn't hurt to check.

Try having somone else rev the engine or drive slowly w/ you outside so you can figure out exactly where it coming from. That'll make it a lot easier to diagnose the problem.
