So I have this little 1.8 L turbo motor for my 240sx. What are the chances that the smaller displacement will make up for the turbo? Will it really put out a lot more emissions than a 2.4L? I mean emissions in Japan are super strict the way it is(getting your engine overhauled every 2 years or whatever). Why else would these SR's, Type R's, and CA's be availible to us?

i don't believe it would pass, and thats probably one of the reasons nissan didn't bring it over.

you're issue isn't the sniffer test, it's the visual. in your state do they not allow imported engines? as in, not USDM.

some states allow the engine if it passes. and I'm sure they'll pass. if it doesn't get a new cat, or do what suburu does, throw in 2, if that doesn't work, throw in 3.

wisconsin...they have emissions there!? <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'>

I'm sure it'll pass(if they allow the engine).

The CA18DET, same as the SR20DET was never sold in america therefore either of them are illegal. &nbsp; It may pass the "sniffer" but not a visual inspection.

My state told me any motor swap is fine, as long as it passes the sniffer and the visual... but they added that that was not true for DOT. &nbsp;Any engine not originally sold in the US is illegal, unless it has undergone certification.

Aside from that, the problem w/ cars passing emission usually isn't from new cars (hence the Japanese laws on age and US state laws that generally allow a car a "pass" for the first 2-5 years). &nbsp; In the US, however, we chose to drive our cars forever and must have regular check ups. &nbsp;A motor that would pass new may new (in Japan or the US) may not pass 50K+ mi later.

Honestly, if it weren't from Japan and wasn't an SR, how would you feel about buying a 10 year old motor from a junkyard? &nbsp;I sure as hell wouldn't do it!

This whole emissions thing is keeps pooping up, if having an illegal engine bothers you that much, i say turbo you KA, or buy a car that comes turbo stock. It really shouldnt bother everyone so much, I am sure someone near you has an SR swap, they are all over the place. Just ask where they got thier car checked at and what to do to get it to pass.
