hey guys...ran into another problem. WHen installng my cams I didnt mark the OEM camgear sprokets, or chain. ANyways I took the cams out, head off, put in new headstuds/gasket. Then put the head back on. Now...this is where im stuck. I have the sprokets bolted to the cams...layed both intake and exhuast in their spots. I turned the crank over until the crank pully is reading TDC (OR SO I THINK? please check pic #2) With this being "TDC" I can now line up my camspokets to the chain. (OR SO I THINK? Please check pic #1) I tried reading the factory FSM but am not sure. Pics #1 shows the cam sproket holes lining up with what I think are the "2 silver chain marks". Also when I took off the Chain tensoner and tried turning it over by hand it skipped a little teeth(skipping on the cam sproket or from the bottom I do not know. PLease look at the pics and If you can see if its wrong let me know how to fix it. Sorry for the rant,...and thanks for all the info you guys have helped me alot!

Your setup looks OK. If you're worried about being at TDC you can always double check by putting a long screwdriver down the #1 plug hole and rotating the crank... Edit: It's an SR? You didn't specify but it doesn't look like my KA...

Also, don't forget to put some RTV under the valve cover gasket in the half moon areas in the front and back of the head! Otherwise you'll get a nasty leak there & have oil running down the front of your motor like puke down a freshman's shirt. :barf:

Cam sprockets should have the timing mark at about 11 oclock (int) and 2 oclock (exh). The cam lobes will be pointing away from each other, towards the fenders.

Don't forget to rotate the crank a few times after you've got the chain on, just to double check there's no interference.

^sorry i forgot to specify...yes it is a s13 sr20. I put a stick down cylinder #1 and the piston is all that way at the top. This is TDC right? Any sr owners wanna chime in? thanks mello88

yeah you seem to be on the right path.
I just did this about two days ago on my little brothers SR.
The two lobes closest to the sprockets should be pointing away from each other.
The two little marks on the sprocket we set to 10 o clock INtake and 12'o clock for exhaust
Don't know if it helps any

^ thanks, a I just checked and both lobes are pointing away from eachother. athough they are not PERFECTLY horizontal(lobes) they are away from eachother. How did you know where to line you sprokets/chain up? Are the two little dots suppose to be facing eachother, away from eachother, etc?

okay...while searching through the FSM I found this pic. This matches my setup now ( I THINK) any input? ;

also...I tightened the head down BEFORE seeing this setup from the FSM...EEEEEEEEE.
I tightened in THIS ORDER 1,2,5,3,6,4,7,9,8,10( like a circle pattern.) here is what they suggest:

should I be worried? Also I cannot find the torque specs on the cam bracket holders if anyone knows? SDorry lots of pics, I just have alot of time and $ invested and dont wanna start it up an hear it go BANG:(

I would retighten the head to make sure it cam down evenly. Also, make sure you don't tighten the individual bolts down all at once.

You should follow the sequence and tighten the bolts down to 30% of the specified torque value. Start the sequence all over again, torque down to 60%. Finally, follow sequence again, this time tightening down all bolts to their recommended value.

NOTE: I believe the stock bolts are liable to stretch so that after a couple of times the recommended torque values will NOT tighten the head down properly. Buy new bolts or a set of ARP studs.

As far as the cam brackets are concerned, I fail at posting a decent picture of the FSM page, but the tightening order and torque values are located on page EM-28 (PDF page 65) of the S14 SR20DET FSM.
