Hey guys....Im kind of a lurker on here, but I figured I would post up my big project finally. Ive been working on this since mid-july and have been able to make some good progress. My goal was to create a fun car for my personal use....the car will see the road course, drift days, hell maybe even the drag strip a time or two....so basically its just suppossed to be a lot of fun for me when its done!

That in mind....since i loved my first s14 so much....i decided to get another one. I found a 96 local to me with some front end damage and scored it sans motor for 700 bux. I cleaned the gutted the piss out of the thing and fixed the body. Then the fun started...the car is fully seam welded and caged. I built a semi-tube front to replace the mangled and wrecked portions and I also made some front tubs.

So far the car has some good parts on it to the tune of:
RB25DET
Stance GR+ Pro coils
R33 Front brakes/calipers
Z32 Rear calipers/rotors+Ebrake
Custom Cage
Recaro SPG
Rays GramLights 57Maximum 17x9 Et22 all around
SPL solid subframe bushings
Nismo Front arms
etc etc....theres lots of stuff and even more to come!

My plans from here include a custom radiator/intercooler setup to keep the plumbing short (not v-mount), big turbo + custom exahust mani + custom intake mani, custom exahust + DP, some sort of EMS, kouki front, SPL susp. links...etc....its a solid project IMO and its coming along very well!

A ton of pics can be seen on a forum local to my area if you go here: http://racingsouthwest.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=31576 and can see way more pics thru the progress of the car, and below ill post the more interesting ones!

How it started:
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h103/gkurey/IMG_1565.jpg

Long story short....cleand and gutted + seam welding!
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h103/gkurey/IMG_1747.jpg

Seamd' bay + wheel tub construction, also note lower rad support missing!
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h103/gkurey/IMG_1770.jpg

BTW i built a little dolley to hold the car up so i could easily wheel it around the garage! Here is the front end all mocked up!
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h103/gkurey/IMG_1885.jpg

The cage
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h103/gkurey/IMG_1923.jpg

Skip even futher ahead, just recently slid the motor in so i can do more fab, and got the car back on the ground!
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h103/gkurey/IMG_2000.jpg

Motor again...note custom battery tray and tie down!
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h103/gkurey/IMG_1997.jpg

I plan to update this thread regularly...and if you want to see 17 pages worth of the work i have done, look at that other thread....this is a short overview of what has taken a long time, but i just wanted to share and i hope you all like it...let me know what you think! Stay tuned!

hey you should look into the greddy intake manifold, it'll make running the intercooler piping alot easier plus gets rid of the weird intercooler pipe plumbing, just a suggustion, but other than that it looks great

what does seam welding the car do?

nice build so far ... and nice wheels :)

its suppost to "stiffin" the chassis...

it really doest do too much, but it helps for really paying nothing for it. when paired with a cage etc. its a great thing, the org seems are actually glued together, so this is a way to keep everything "together"

anyways, so when are we all gonna hang out?

Thanks for all the response guys! Im glad you guys are stoked on it like I am!

Being able to weld really makes this project affordable and practical...I save tons of money making everything myself. To those who asked....I have been only welding for a year-year and a half. I just got a TIG last week too, so my turbo manifold and intake manifold will be built by yours truly too! I would highly encourage everyone to own a MIG welder....its a great tool and you can learn quick! One of my best buds has a degree in welding and metal tech, so I mostly learned my technique from him, so that helps too!

Inlandsilvia - the RB will stay stock head and stock block until i have a reason to upgrade...i think it should handle what i throw at it for now....all im going to do is pull the head, throw in a head gasket and ARP's and check everything out. It will get a beefy fuel system, custom turbo manifold and turbo setup, custom intake mani, etc. Looking to be able to make over 500whp, but while I get used to a light car with lots of power....ill prob just run 300-350whp initially so I dont kill myself :)

ledzeppelin240 - the tubs give more wheel clearance. On my black car, with 17x8.5's and 225's it rubbed the stock wheel well pretty bad with stock tie rod length....ive got bigger tires now and with adjustable rods, so im betting the clearance wouldve been worse, so i tubbed it for better clearance.

If nothing else, this project has been an excuse for me to get a lot of nice tools :)

Ill keep it updated guys....if you have any comments/suggestions/criticism, let me know i wanna hear!

Thanks 91ka...I try to keep it nice n clean!

whats up with the front ladder bar thing? what made you decide to cut into the stock frame rails?

Chmercer, this would be my main motivation :) too mangled to fix....and this way i have more room for a trick IC/Rad setup (not vmount, but still a very short plumbing track, you will see in due time!)

i agree with Gavster about welding, it is probably my greatest all around skill. it has gotten me countless jobs, and continues to make and save me money. i am begining my cage in my s14. guess how much i have in it? about 250$. why? because all i have to pay for is the material.....suckas!

K, im letting the cat out of the bag....vmounted RB in an S14 FTW....i dont think ive seen this done at all yet by anyone else...and I will say this, its TONS of work and Im willing to admit that I underestimated the difficulty, but I so far am rising up and overcoming :) You will see below how I am modifying the subframe to move the engine mounts back. I will be making my own poly mounts to lower the engine about an inch and a half as well. Also, I will be forced to do a dry sump oil setup with this due to oil pan clearance on the subframe, but thats better anyways :) Just a taste of what I did this weekend....i mustve pulled and installed the engine 6-7 times, yikes!! Oh and I had to increase the hole size in the firewall....the intake plenum and cylinder head will be well behind the firewall....yay for better weight distribution and lower center of gravity....and DRY $UMP haha lol

this reminds me of my old shop teachers 'cuda... he just kept cutting and welding till he got the INSANE setup he wanted. custom 4link in the rear, coilovers in the front, moved the engine back and lowered it, massive MASSIVE suspension bars, (sway/strut bars) in the front.... cut firewall. he welded in a wheelbarel body to create a rounded hump in the firewal. amazing.

Gavster
11-23-2006, 02:28 AM
A-Tech, that tubs were made from 20ga. sheet....just a bit thinner than the body metal. I was able to form the curve in the tubs by hand, but could also be formed over something like the side of a bucket if you want perfection without a sheet-roller!

Vizion-Z, I will create a new upper-structure to accomidate the v-mount setup if thats what you are asking!

punxva, jobestudios - im flattered thanks so much!

Team Rootbeer, I totally agree, im welding in all the easiest circumstances and materials, but hey, gotta learn somewhere....im not even too excited to start playing the aluminum t-joints....should be interesting :)

ranger2339, right now this is just a fun build for me that i intend to take to open track days, drift days, etc. Its not really going to be a competitive car, because frankly im located in NM, not really the biggest scene here, but I love what I do, and my time and effort is totally worth it!

Nemeguero, The master cyl right now looks fine to me...but i guess time will tell....i will do what i need to in order to get this right! On the mount extension, i used 10ga. cold-rolled steel...strong as f***

MS!3, like the other guys said, i used dry ice where possible, everywhere else, i used a heat gun and scraper...and i actually think that might be the better way honestly....next time i do a whole car, im going with heat gun 100% of the time!

I think i will get to post some pics tomorrow of my custom poly mounts i made....they lower the engine about 1.75 inches....w00t w00t!

Oh, and noted about the premie acct....maybe ill get one soon!

K, one more update this weekend as promised! I got the engine mounts all done and built! It took some time, and a little creativity, but its all done and I have custom poly mounts! I borrowed heavily from a thread I found on *ahem*nicoclub*ahem* and decided to make my own. I used flexane 94 as the body of the mount and grade 8 hardware. Below are pics of the process! Now, the engine sits a good, low height and the driveshaft and everything fit! Now, I need to finish modding the tranny tunnel and sorting out the tranny mount and I can rebuild the new and improved firewall...hopefully next weekend! Check out the pics:

Keep up the work! These kinds of threads motivate me to keep going on my project. Once i get to the chassis stage I will be looking at photos to see how people did their stitch welds. I like yours the best. I wish i could weld aluminum. Maybe one of these days i will have to take a class and learn how to TIG.

Thanks guys!

worangejuice, thats cool you are from here! I actually am wayy into vw's too and am always at that dealership...do you know jon shodean per chance from parts? He is a good friend of mine! I dont work at speedlab but my good buddy brody owns it...great guy great shop! What a coincidence hahaha!

I will hopefully have more updates this weekend!

Yeah, I actually worked with Jon there. He had that dope little GTI. Did he ever get his engine back?haha. He was waiting for that for a long time. Last time I heard Jon was at the dealership. Tell him Warren said hey and all the other guys there. Can't wait to see the ride when it's done!!!

Carlos, the firewall will look relatively stock when the dash is in place....it will basically be a big "box" encasing the motor and tranny and i plan to integrate a door or removable plate onto my new tranny tunnel so i can still access tranny bolts n stuff so changing the tranny will be snap~! Pics will follow this weekend!

S13_Gearhead, Im glad to share with everyone....hopefully what i share will be useful to someone else!

Warren, I will tell Jon you said hey! He is still at university and he has a mk1 rabbit now that hes putting that 2.2 16v turbo into and then he also just got a new mk5 rabbit too! Up to his old tricks!

K, so this weekend, despite finals starting tomorrow....i got my tranny mount all done and did the shifter relocation. This week, if i get some time between tests, i will start mocking up the tunnel. Progress will go a little slow on the car for the next few weeks while i build a cage for a local guy's s13 hatch. If he doesnt mind, ill post up pics of that too.

Anywho, here are some photomographs of the tranny mount as well as the shifter relocation:

So...being that I moved the engine/trans about 3.5 inches back, the shifter obivously isnt in the right spot any more....leaving me with only one responsible choice....make a new hole! OR, better yet...use OEM :) We start by preserving the OEM shifter hole and bosses for the rubber boot:
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h103/gkurey/IMG_2066.jpg

Clear out the appropriate space to move backwards and then tack the shifter hole in place at its new hom. Now, observe empty space:
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h103/gkurey/IMG_2067.jpg

Cut up repacement metal and tack in for seamless install:
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h103/gkurey/IMG_2068.jpg

Weld out and then grind back down for that "hey this looks OEM" look:
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h103/gkurey/IMG_2069.jpg

Alternate angle
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h103/gkurey/IMG_2070.jpg

With the shifter in place:
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h103/gkurey/IMG_2075.jpg

Mounting spot for one side of the tranny mount...unfortunately i didnt take more pics of the mount itself....ill take some in a week or two when i pull the engine again!
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h103/gkurey/IMG_2071.jpg

Engine and tranny laying as they will when its all done! Glorious!
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h103/gkurey/IMG_2077.jpg

So many cool things in this picture its not even funny :)

GT Fabrications sells those AIM gauge clusters for like $900 I believe... Pretty much every car they build in their shop has it. My buddy's car has one in it and I freakin love it. I wish it was out a couple years ago when I bought all my Autometer gauges, I would have just gotten that instead.

Figure instead of spending $1000+ bucks on a bunch of gauges (boost, egt, oil temp, oil press, etc), you can just spend it all on this, and it will show you all the same stuff (and more) and look 100x cleaner. It has a crapload of outputs too for different sensors, way more than youll ever need in most cars.

Can someone tell me if the AIM gauge can read off our ECU's or do you have to have an AEM to run it? I was looking at their website and it looks like they have one that will plug into the AEM system but what if you like the MAF setup but want all the details this gauge setup has to offer?

We're working on this right now. Currently, the AIM does not read from the factory ECU, but we have forwarded the nissan protocol to AIM and hopefully they will be able to do something with it. If they do it will be able to interface with any nissan with a consult port pretty much.

You don't have to have an AEM or any other standalone for that matter. The thing that's nice about having an ECU that the AIM will interface with is that fact that you won't need to run extra sensors for the dash.

The AIM can be a standalone display/data acquisition system. You just need to run sensors for whatever you want it to monitor.

Smelly, the unit Gavster has is the Mychron3 Plus. Get in touch with me if you want a good price on one of the MXL series units. We just did a group buy for them on here and along with Gavster there's a few other people getting them. I can't wait to see them in people's cars.

Oh man, so i know the updates have been slow over winter break, but i just have not been able to work on it til today! For one day, I got a crap load done! Today I fully formed and contructed the firewall, its practically allll done. Started out with some cutting, some bending, some guess n check, and lots of welding and cutting followed by some grinding! I am more than pleased with the results and its strong as f*** so no complaints! I decided to leave a small access door so I can get to the upper tranny bolts and still drop the tranny without having to drop the motor too, im just assuming that will come in handy :)

I also got my kouki front end it...all brand new OEM Nissan stuff...I love it! All I need is fenders, and I need them BAD to finish contructing the front braces, then I can shove it off to paint. Anyone know of any OEM metal Kouki fenders floating around??? I need em bad but cant really spend 600 on a new set from performance nissan....LMK!

Anyways, here are the pics::::

Started from the top of the big hole downwards...got this all done in about 45 minutes!~

I was never intending to keep my heater core/blower assy, etc....So no heat by those means...I was considering inserting electric seat warmers into my recaro to keep my butt warm in the cold...I also might get an electric heater i.e. jeep style to keep warm, but initially, i wont have any heating/cooling/blower etc.

Staygold...Im looking into version select aero or OEM kouki aero + a trust lip...im not sure what ill go with, but I know from my last s14 I really loved the durability and fitment of OEM parts so...we shall see! Any one have any ideas?

Hey guys! More pics will be up this weekend...im going to complete the sealing/welding on the firewall and construct the upper front brace so stay tuned! Kognition...PM sent :)

Santacruisin...The seat position will stay the same, reason being this: The RB bolted up in normal position, the shifter is about 1.5" forward of the stock SR/KA shifter position. WHen I moved it back, it was then about 1.5-2" behind stock, which i found actually more comfortable and better than stock, so I opted to leave the seating. Also, I dont have to fuss with the pedals that way!

Where are you putting the gas pedal?

the mouting spot for it has been mostly cutoff and you made the space by your feet a bit smaller, goin to be a tight squeez.

Gavster
01-19-2007, 09:22 AM
The space is only tight off to the right side, and it is still firmly mounted to the car, so im not worried....i will be fitting it this weekend so we will see for sure tomorrow!

Nothing can compare to the WELD 14 Chassis. .. .This is 1st one nissan S Chassis automobile that I condone a true canadate for the 13SR, that engine does have its advantages .

Big Ups to RED SQUARE (you know)

I think it will take a few years for company // Individual to develop a chassis as toned for the developed chassis' age. its perfect. .. .damn near.

I am very anticipated to see how your project turns out tho as well Gavster, I am highly interested in the over all production

Best of luck this season .. ..

So...as promised, a big weekend update! ...massive amounts of pics ahead!

Anyways, so I set out to build my front end this weekend and start getting the car ready for paint, and for once, I actually got everything done that I wanted to! I started out by welding small plates in infront of the wheel tubs to close up a small gap on each side, and then i sealed the firewall/tranny tunnel. After that, I filled 24 1/2 inch holes i drilled in the body of the car to remove some oem bracing. After that, I finished welding in the other half of my harness bar that I had been slacking on for a few weeks.

Then, I finally got to the front end construction. Having a set of fenders was essential to this, and my set of used kouki fenders came thru on friday!! So i slapped those on (prepped the clean one for paint, have to fix the other) and began my magic. I made the most complex pipe ive ever bent onmy bender for the upper piece; 4 bends, but super close to eachother, def at the limit of the bender there as fasr as spacing goes...TITS. Then I mocked up the head lights and used the grilled to set them up right....Now I have attachment points for my vmount setup and theres so much space it will easily accommodate a large rad and large IC (easily 12x20x3!)...anyways, more work to follow...gonna be getting everything ready for paint, she goes in tentatively around valentines day! Now for some pics....

Here is the cage, now finally complete with a full-width harness bar
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h103/gkurey/F2.jpg

14 of 24 holes i welded shut, ground out, and flapper-disc'd...came out decent:

SicBastard
01-31-2007, 12:29 AM
If it includes all of the coils and the crank sensor I say go for it.
There's got to be a supra 1jz or rb26 or rb20 map out there to start with.
Check out some Austrailian web sites. It is a lot of work, but it will pay some serious dividends if you decide to really crank the boost later. Plus starting at the beginning is never a bad thing with a project like this.

Thanks alot guys for all of your support and compliments, it means a lot!

So small update...it was a little cold to shoot the car with primer this weekend, which was my big plan so I had to 86 that....so I started working on my intake manifold. Unfortunately, I dont think it will work, so Im prob gonna scrap it, but ill show you all what I was doing anyway. I obtained an rb26dett intake plenum, and wad going to graft it together with the head-flange side on the oem manifold...good idea, but it just wont work like I want....so I think ill just make my own plenum now, which will probably be better anyway....oh well it was worth a shot and it was cheap so...no complaints here! Pics:

RB26 Plenum
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h103/gkurey/IMG_2255.jpg

Rough fit after doing lots of cutting to the stocky :)
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h103/gkurey/IMG_2257.jpg

Cut off flanges from stock plenum, tack it all together and test fit..

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h103/gkurey/IMG_2260.jpg

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h103/gkurey/IMG_2262.jpg

So in short, the thing just doesnt work tooo well, I just thought id try...the plenum itself is reaaaaaally sick though...Ill have to snag some pics of the inside of it...big volume and awesome ports! Also the TB position kinda leaves lots to be desired, which is why I especially wont go with this plenum....

Oh, and I an rethinking the vmount idea and perhaps doing something else, also not very conventional :) Im stoked and it will be pretty original as far as 240's go....stay tuned!
