I am looking to get a 95-98 240SX SE or higher trim.  I think they all come with LSD right, but the VLSD is optional.

Is there a badge or anything that would tell me I have a VLSD?

if it has LSD that means its VLSD. the 240 only comes with VLSD, or an open diff. &nbsp;I cant remember how to tell by looking at it. But if ya get a chance to drive it, just rev it to 5k or so and side step the clutch. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'> &nbsp;it there is 2 black lines you have it, if there is one, you dont!

ok there is a orange tag on the back cover of your diff it says VLSD now in the car these are hard to see. they other way to check is put a floor jack under the rear of your car lift both wheels off the ground. block your front wheels so it won't roll because you need to leave it in neutral with the parking brake off. get your friend and have him hold one wheel you grab the opposite wheel and turn it. If it turns freely with your friend holding the other wheel then its an open diff. If it fights him and wants to go the same direction you are rotating your side its VLSD. This is a tried and true test. I have done it to many times . hehehehehe yes I like finding VLSD's.
Oh yeah the other thing to check out on the car is does it have ABS know most people who ordered the ABS option ordered the VLSD not everybody though. I actually came across a ABS open diff this last weekend and was rather shocked because nine times out of ten the ABS rear ends I have found where VLSD.
well hope this helps. Oh yeah one more thing get the vin number off the car and run it at your local Nissan dealer. If the parts guy at your Nissan dealer has any brains he can look it up on their computer and tell you if your car came with it or not. It is on their system if it came from the factory that way.
I have done this with my old 89 fastback. It had VLSD , it was on the computer at Sage &nbsp;Nissan in Glendale

What about Hicas? &nbsp; If it has Hicas, shouldn't it have VLSD?

yes most all hicas cars had VLSD because you got the full boat ABS VLSD HICAS . Go check your car like I said in the last post . I know that the one or two HICAS cars I have seen wrecked had the VLSD. It seems that most people who ordered the HICAS would go full boat on all the performance options.

This same topic is also in chat....anyways, LSD was an option that came with abs...if you dont have abs you dont have lsd. &nbsp; Badmojo said it right...if it has lsd..it will be vlsd. &nbsp; Anyways, to check for abs...which is much easier, turn on your car and a yellow ABS light will come on (if not, no abs) &nbsp;Next, pop your hood and look to the left of the engine...there will be a black box with brake lines coming out of it (if not...no abs) &nbsp; &nbsp;Third, open your fuse pannel and look for the abs fuse...if you dont have said fuse, no abs. &nbsp; &nbsp; Again, NO ABS = NO LSD

errr wrong Rampid, ABS and VLSD were both options that could be tied together or kept seperate. I have proven this fact . I owned a 89 non ABS fastback that had VLSD and it was a base model. read my previous post carefully. ON top of that also in my previous post I have come across cars with ABS and NO VLSD.
I have field tested facts behind my info on this. I would not post about this if I had not researched the shit out of it. Plus having first hand experience

ok then, i guess i just assumed that the majority would have abs and lsd or none of them...since they were both tied together in the same package (at least on s14's). &nbsp;Until now i had not come across a car with one or the other...Thanks for clearing that up

or if you wanted to, jack up the rear-end, and spin either one of the wheels clockwise and then counterclockwise. &nbsp;if the opposite wheel spins at the same speed and rate and direction as the one you are turning, you have lsd. &nbsp;if it just spins by itself, then you obvioulsy don't. &nbsp;or like others are saying, take it somewhere, rev to a good 4k-5k, drop it, and find out by marks!

Transfers power to both of your rear wheels.

If you want to know which options were available/bundled/etc, the Features &amp; Specs FAQ at www.socal240sx.org has brochure scans. And since the thread-starter was asking about S14's, you could tell him the ABS/VLSD were usually bundled together those years. And what's this I've heard about all Canadian 240's having VLSD? I'm a Canuck and I find this hard to believe... is it true?
