Okay so I just hooked up my boost gauge and boost controller and everything feels good. Its holding a strong .9 bar through all the gears... except for 5th. It first started with testing out the car on an on ramp. It felt great all the way up to 5th then when the full boost kicks in it slips bad. I didnt smell anything but then I got on it in 3rd after getting off the highway and it held.
I really dont know if its the clutch or the gear. I have also been hearing some whining noise from the transmission but only in 5th and only when I press the gas. Just let me know whether one yall think it is. Also if it is the clutch what one would you recommend? I plan on upgrading the turbo eventually but nothing big as I am pretty satisfied with the power now and would look to the s15 turbo after this. I was leaning towards exedy stage 2 but have heard good things about some others.
Thanks in advance
i dont know if you have a gear or clutch problem...but id recomand spec d clutch kit.

if the noise you are hearing only goes on in 5th gear during acceleration, then the 5th gear bearing on either the input or output shaft is going bad. and I would recommend an illegal garage clutch, i have it, all my friends run it on their 240s and corollas and they work great!

With the bearings going bad would I have to go into the tranny? Or can that be avoided and how bad is that damage?
EDIT: also I bought the car around 6 months ago and have not changed the tranny fluid. Do yall think that could solve the problem of the tranny whine?

change it man!
chances are the person before u was just as lazy, bet its gonna come out looking like black sludge...
try some redline MT90.
note: dont get "shockproof"
as for clutches, illegal garage and RPsport and exedy stage 2 all have great reputations for durability.

if the bearings are bad than you can try replacing the tranny fluid and hopefully the noise wont come back or it wont be as loud...or you might as well just replace the tranny itself

thanks guys. Im gonna change the tranny fluid when I change the oil. Anyone know if the clutch problem with 5th could be related to the gear? I dont have anyone that sells redline around me, any other suggestions on good fluid? The whining isnt too bad but noticable with music off. It's volume goes up as the rpms go up so I do think it is the input shaft bearing.. I just hope it goes away

it shouldnt be gear related because if the gears are bad than the noise will be heard anytime you are in 5th gear. since you said theres a whining noise while accelerating, than a bearing should be at fault. bad bearings usually make more noise when theyre under load such as accelerating...

and I forgot to mention, that the tranny drain and fill plugs are usually on so freakin tight. make sure you loosen the fill plug first then the drain and be careful cuz these strip very very easily

Me personally I would never use anything other than SPEC clutch kits! Because they hold great and the pedal feel is just as good a s stock! I hate a grabby clutch feel - but thats just me!
But I have read quite a few threads on other sites that state the cheap ebay XTD (I think is what they are called)? clutch kits are really good???
But like I say to everybody spend alil extra $$ and find what you like best and then you will have a favorite for life!
By that I mean lose a lil $$ by buying new clutches use them for a short while and then sell them and use what you get plus some more of your $$ and try another. Until you find your baby! :D ;)

The minute I upped boost on my RB the clutch started getting iffy. I am going to a Exedy Stage II. I happen to like Daiken/Exedy they have been in the business a long time and are known for good clutches.

Exedy is definitely badass.
If you guys wanna have some clutches that will hold some serious power and last a long time, check out our line of Carbonetic clutches!
Should have something up by tomorrow about them, look in the appropriate forum for that :bigok:

The Carbonetics single plate carbon clutch is awesome. i have it on my RB, and the driveability is great. Pedal feel is also awesome.

Speaking of black sludge, this stuff came out of my transmission, its a dark brown. I drained the tranny back in July and the stuff that came out was honey colored. I replaced the fluid with Mobil 1 75w90 not realizing that it was API 5, which, according to Redline eats synchros. Since then, I've driven maybe 400 miles with the Mobil 1 but it was in for 3 months, then I replaced it with Redline MT90. Its original color was a very light honey. Is this my liquified synchros or something else?

I'M ready to say that's just the dirt in your tranny. Trust me, i've seen my oil (what used to be in there) and it was the stock 120k mile oil. Didn't even feel oily at all and it was so dark you COULD NOT see through it. I replaced it with some synthetic stuff they sell at Oil Changers and got a special additive put in,forget the name of it.
My point is: change your tranny oil, or else your synchros will go bad like mine, and changing trannys sucks.
Another tip for you is, when you change the fluid, flush the tranny out with some cheap oil (buy lots of it, and keep pouring in until what comes out of the drain hole is the same color as what goes in. Lucky for me, my friend works at that oil changers so he flushed it for me for free.

allright im changin all fluids this saturday. any recommendations on what kind? I dont have any redline dealers around me. also i found out the reason for the clutch slip in 5th is because its the highest gear and I had been on the car for a while before and it was pretty warmed up. Tranny whine is thought to be output shaft bearing but Im hoping the noise goes away with the shoddy fluid.
Recommendations?

Summit Racing carries Redline's full product lineup and they have a warehouse in GA. If you ordered tomorrow I would bet you would get it thursday or friday.

Rather not deal with shipping and all that just go to a store and get it. Any other besides redline?

Look for Motul, they're known to make good stuff, but I think its harder to find than Redline, your only other choice is really to go to Autozone, Pepboys, or Advance and pick up an API 4 manual transmission oil.

+1 for Redline MT90. I put it in my tranny and grinding went away. Also, for clutches I'd recommend RPS. I love mine.
