I am not going to lie to you folks, this car is a little beat up. I bought the car about 5 and 1/2 years ago and started autocrossing it right away. The car and I have seen several autocross events, a dozen or so drift events, and and handful of open track and HPDE days.
In all the years I have owned this car, the only significant issue I had was the transmission bearings went out. There is a replacement transmission in now that has been great for the last 10k or so.
I hear people often say they would never buy a modified car. Too many problems. This is often true, and this car won't be an exception. However, weigh the cost of dealing with little issues vs. building a stock car up to this level. You will find the discrepancy in the THOUSANDS of dollars in favor of the modified car. I have already dumped the big bucks into this project, and done all the hard work.
Now for the good stuff. I set this car up to be FUN to drive more than anything else. Everyone who has driven it comments on how fun the car is, and how incredibly good the steering response is.
Suspension stuff:
Tein HE coilover suspension
Tein hard tie rods
Tein tension control rods
Whiteline anit-roll bars front and rear
Peak Performance rear upper control arms
C-Tune toe control rods
300zx brakes in front with Cobalt GT spec pads.
SPL Parts braided, teflon coated brake lines. Motul RBF600 fluid.
Yes. She stops FAST. Turns FAST.
Currently, alignment is -2.0 camber front and -3.0 rear. +7.5 degrees caster in front. Zero toe all around. The rear camber needs to come back to - 1.5 or -2.0 to be ideal, but its fine now.
Wheels and tires: MB Weapon 17x9 +17 offset with Cooper Zeon 2XS 235/40/17s all around. 75% life on all tires. Still pretty new.
Drivetrain stuff:
ACT street disk with heavy duty pressure plate. Holding the power fine and very easy to drive. Tanabe transmission bushing and there is a Kaaz 2 way differential.
Engine stuff:
Factory KA24DE that has been turbocharged. ETD racing tubular manifold. Turbonetics T3/T4 50 trim compressor and a .48 exhaust housing. JGS Turbo wastegate. HKS old school ( first gen ) SSQ BOV. Spearco intercooler. RS-Enthalpy ECU tune. Deatschwerks.com 550cc injectors. 300zx MAFS. Greddy Profec Type S electronic boost controller.
All this, plus all the other little things resulted in 250hp at the wheels on 10psi of boost. 240lbs-ft of torque.
Inside the car is a Bride Zetta 3. Perfect for my frame, but racing seats are very individual things. I would LOVE to take this seat with me!
Some bad things about the car:
The paint is oxidizing on the roof. There are a few other trouble spots as well. The car still looks good @ 10 feet, but its due for a re-paint if you care about that sort of thing. On the right rear corner, the bumper is damaged from when I tapped the wall drifting at Irwindale Speedway. The bumper needs replacing, but nothing else was affected.
The horn, windshield wipers, and heater don't work. I have never really bothered with this stuff because its a track car. Won't be too hard to fix. Aside from that, no stereo and no A/C. Removed for extra space in the engine bay and weight savings.
I do NOT recommend this car to be used as a street car as is. Currently with the turbo system, it is not legal to drive on the street. I don't care because I live in Berkeley and ride my bike everywhere. However, I left the emissions controls intact, so putting the car back to legal and smoggable driving status would actually not take more than a day or so working on the car. Seriously. This car could be put back to a really cool daily driver. You would just have to spend some time with it.
The current engine has over 150,000 miles on it. Last time I checked the compression it was very good ( about 2000 miles ago ). Right at factory spec. These KA engines are tough as nails and have been known to go right past 200,000 miles with out issue. I have been very good about keeping fresh, quality oil in. BUT. It won't hold on forever. As is, I would consider this car a prime candidate for an engine swap.
As you have just read, I am being totally honest and straight forward about the condition of the car. This is not a car for for everyone. If fact, its a pretty extreme car. Driving it on a race track makes the rest of your non-racetrack life feel like slow motion.
My asking price is negotiable. I am not stupid, or a sucker, so don't email me offers of $2000 because you are wasting your time. Fair offers will be entertained. Trades are absolutely welcome. But I am the kind of guy who won't drive a car I don't like. So your Toyota Camery is not a viable trade. I am open to many different car, so tell me what you have and we will talk about it.
I am particularly interested in early Datusn Z cars, and Porsche 914s.
