Im planning on picking up a KA24DE tommorrow from the junkyard. I want to compression check it before i spend my time pulling it from the car. I know the car has no oil so Im not gonna try to start the car, and warm it up. So what i was wondering what kind of numbers should I expect out of a cold motor. At the moment I just know I want them to be pretty even all the way across. Besideds that i was just gonna look for burnt oil in the head/valve cover, check the plugs, look for remnants of milky oil, and look for major oil or coolent leaks. Is there anything else I could check before I spend my time pulling this motor?

Pretty much anything above 140psi on all cylinders, each adjacent cylinder should be withing 14psi of eachother. You may also want to drop the oil pan and check for metal and such.

yeah, my old engine ran 185 across the board, but i sold the hatch a few years ago. This cars motor smokes horribly, and came to 110 across the b ard til you pour oil down the cylinders...then it gets to about 175. Thanks for information, Ill see how this one works out.

so are you planning on getting the engine. ive always thought that if you pour oil down the cylinders and the comp. goes up then the rings are bad. especially if its smoking. in which case i wouldnt get the motor unless your planning on rebuilding it. i could be wrong on this though.

The motor that I talked about smoking with 110 across the board is the current engine in my car. Im pulling that out after I find a good enough junkyard motor.
