Someone left a stolen car parked across the street and the officer supervising the towing of it randomly ran my plates as it was parked. Of course, my dash was replaced and has a different VIN # from the rest of the body. after some convincing and showing her proof of regristration and showing her the matching vin on the door jams and engine bay she left me with a warning..."if the public VIN does not match or is missing, when I am pulled over by a cop, it will be towed immediately." Is that bullshit or what? My car is registered in WA, Im only here for a short while, but I will be here again next summer and I dont want to risk it being towed. I called the DMV in WA and they tell me that they will not register the VIN to the dash vin and to just pull it off...and so that's what I did. Why can't they just check the VIN off the door jam? does anyone know if there is any truth in her statement?

they can't just check the vin off the door jam because.
like when u get a non moving violation, like parking or something, they can't have access to the door jam and usually look at the dash vin.

I have my school parking sticker in front of my vin number. Isn't it just rivited in? If so, just rivit the new one in. You'd probally have to take the dash out.

Yeah, you're the one mistaken here. You should've swapped your old VIN onto the new dash.

What if you have no dash, or have a JDM dash in with a RHD conversion, where there is no place for a VIN? Is there a law that says you have to have a dashboard?

Any shady business with missing plates or vin stickers and you'll get hassled.
let me share a story... I had two friends get their FCs impounded one night, due to not having vin plates on the dash (on the FC the plate goes into some plastic which breaks away). One dude had the actual VIN plate (of course it matches his reg/ins, firewall and door) but it "didn't matter" because it wasn't attached, and the other dude had painted over the door jamb sticker when he primered the car (haha fucking dumbass :duh: ). Nevermind that his ins/reg and firewall vins matched. Both cars got towed to impound that night, due to the overwhelming "evidence" that both cars were stolen and chock full of stolen parts. Both cars came out of impound a week later after VICE team looks over for stolen parts, and wouldn't you know it, they didn't find one fucking stolen part. Each dude had to pay about $450 (for impound/tow fees).
Check out what the tow truck driver did to dude's FMIC...

He was also kind enough to give him the flat-bottom exhaust tips he always wanted...
So yeah be careful with your VINs, it can cause you a great deal of headache.
